The term “flute” refers to a woodwind instrument that is held horizontally while being played. The oldest flutes are said to be from 35,000 to 43,000 years old and were found in Germany. There are many names for flutes, such as the cross flute and the transverse flute. Around 1000 AD, in the 10th and 11th centuries, it seems that the flute disappeared then reappeared with the rise and fall of Rome. In 1670 the flute went from being one peice to three: the head, body, and foot joints.
There are many materials used to make flutes, including wood, nickel, silver, platinum, and a few other materials. The pads are made of cork and felt. The materials used to create a flute greatly affect the sound of the instrument. Wooden flutes create lower sounds while silver flutes produce higher sounds. The …show more content…

They should be able to go for several measures without needing to take a breath. Piano levels of sound actually take more support than forte levels of sound. When inhaling, the abdomen and lower back should expand, and when breathing out, the air should be controlled. A flutist shouldn’t raise their shoulders when they inhale. Philip Dunigan said, “When you have taken a breath it should feel as if you’ve swallowed a whole watermelon.”
When playing the flute, the player’s bum should be near the edge of their seat. Their feet should be flat on the floor, legs uncrossed. The flute should be perfectly horizontal and the head joint should not touch their shoulder. The fingers should not go more than a few centimeters from the keys so that they may switch notes faster.
A very helpful exercise to improve playing is taking a song you are playing and doing a scale to the rhythm of the song. This helps with rhythm and gives the player some practice on their scales. It also helps to start on the lowest note possible and go up to the highest possible with a tuner. Each tone should be played until the tuner says that it’s on the right
