“ ‘Bad pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.” -John C. Maxwell. Many characters can have the tragic flaw of pride which is shown in one of Homer’s greatest works, The Odyssey. This flaw causes Odysseus, the protagonist in this book, and other characters as well to get caught in a web of traps. As Odysseus and his men are traveling back home after the Trojan War, they go through many obstacles, dangers and risks because of the flaw, pride, that is in them.

Odysseus’ wanting to go in the mysterious cave made him have pride in intelligence and lead his men into a cave of cyclops where they encounter many risks and deaths. Although Odysseus was able to carry out a well thought out plan, his pride lead to a series of downfall which caused more terrible events in the future, “To survive, Odysseus must rely on the special …show more content…

It started out when Odysseus had made his decision to say this, “Now when I cupped my hands I heard the crew in low voices protesting… I would not heed them in my glorying spirit, but let my anger flare and yelled: ‘Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!’ ”(9.274,284-287). Odysseus telling Polyphemus who he is was a horrible decision but Odysseus couldn’t resist of not getting credit for defeating a monster anyone would be afraid of. His reputation would be ruined, therefore, making him shout out with joy of who he is: Odysseus, the son of Laertes. This resulted of Polyphemus telling his dad, Poseidon, who later on gives Odysseus and his men a very hard time on their expedition which includes all of his men dying.
