Our flag gleams on buildings, it waves on our front porch, it soars in the wind above schools and parks, and it even rests on the casket of those who have fought for our freedom. Our flag symbolizes our country, our freedom, and our hope. The flag should not be burned by protesting. The flag should be shown the utmost respect; to burn the flag would be discounting the lives of the ones who have fought and still fight for our freedom. The only reason we would ever need to burn the flag, is if it has been worn out and or having touched the floor. There are proper an improper ways to burn the flag. By following “Flag Code” we can properly burn the flag in a respectful manner. Others would burn the flag in protest, which is disrespectful. “When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.” (Website: usaflag.org) To burn the flag by burning it in a protest, is the definition of disrespectful. “It represents the strength of our unity and embodies the spirit of the phrase “e pluribus unum””(Flag Burning Should Be Banned, “The American Flag is a Symbol”). “Physical discretion is an act, a destructive act that cannot logically be protected under the mantle of free speech” (Flag burning Should Be Banned, “Destruction is not a right”). The First Amendment prohibits making any law against freedom of speech, not destruction of property of one’s nation. The First Amendment doesn’t exactly protect every true freedom of expression either. “I’m going to kill the president” is a statement that isn’t free.
