Reya Patel Mr. Rowland English II 25 October 2017 Informative Writing All songs have a purpose, whether it is to calm, to hype, to vent, or to motivate. “Fireworks” is an empowering song written for people with low-self esteems. Katy Perry, the writer of “Fireworks”, used many effective tools such as pathos and symbolism in order to motivate her audience to jump over their personal hurdles. This song is meant to empower by boosting one’s image of themselves and pushing one to mentally progress. An excerpt from the song reads, “You don't have to feel like a waste of space. You're original, cannot be replaced. If you only knew what the future holds.” The first line is motivating the audience to hurdle over their negative mindsets. The second line is emphasizing the unique qualities in one that cannot be replicating, making the audience feel special. The third line is creating hope for a positive future. The lyric as a whole symbolizes that just as a beautiful rainbow comes after a horrific storm, something positive can occur after a degrading or downcasting event. This symbolism provides a comparison, which emphasizes the central idea of empowerment by adding a memorable factor of originality. Another example of symbolism used in the song is , “'Cause baby, you're a firework.” Fireworks are just canisters of explosive material, but can show a beautiful display when ignited.
