Now that you have a better understanding about the various types of scholarships and financial aid available to you, how financial aid is awarded to students, and financial aid myths that you shouldn’t believe, you should use this information as your financial aid foundation.

The Scholarship Workbook has been divided into 3 phases to help you with the entire process of searching and applying for scholarships and financial aid. And within each phase, there are several steps to help you complete timely and specific financial aid tasks as you progress throughout your senior year of high school and beyond.

Focus on searching and applying for national, regional, state and local scholarships. Step 1: Financial Aid Basics, Step 2: Personal Assessment, Step 3: Scholarship Search Strategy, Step 4: Financial Aid Sources, and Step 5: Winning Scholarship Applications will help you with Phase 1. The timeline for Phase 1: Scholarships range from August through June.

• Phase 2: FAFSA
In Phase 2: FAFSA, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid also known as the FAFSA. The FAFSA is used to determine your expected family contribution and your eligibility for federal student aid, which is the largest source of financial aid for students. State higher education agencies and colleges will also use the FAFSA information along with other forms to determine your eligibility for state- and school-sponsored financial aid. Step 6: FAFSA will help you with Phase 2. The typical timeline for Phase 2 ranges from November through April.
