Fifth Business Dunstan
Lots of people in our society can be dubbed as ^neutral^ in their
behavior. They dont take part in the events occurring around them but
rather just observe them. This characteristic can be called a
beneficial characteristic as it may keep them out of disagreements. In
the book Fifth Business written by Robertson Davies, Dunny can be
called a neutral person. He tells us about his life story and through
various incidents, it is clearly evident that he is indeed a neutral
person. For instance, the snowball incident and Dunny^s relationship
with Diana show the reader that he is indeed a neutral person who
doesn^t want to get involved deeply in anything at all. Dunny starts
his story from his childhood. He tells us that when he was ten, he had
a fight with Percy Boyd Staunton and during this fight, Percy threw a
snowball at him. He dodged the snowball and it struck the pregnant Mary
Dempster, who was the wife of Reverend Amasa Dempster, on her head.
This led to the premature birth of the baby. Dunny felt responsible for
that incident and spent many sleepless nights but he didn^t tell Mary
what had happened or who threw the snowball. He remained neutral in the
situation despite the fact that he felt guilty and responsible for.
Mary^s loss of senility and the premature birth of the baby. These
strong emotions led him to help Mary in every way possible. Although he
knew that he had not thrown the snowball, he imagined that since it was
meant for him, he shouldn^t have dodged it. Also Paul had told Dunny
that he wasn^t responsible for the snowball because it was Dunny^s
dodging it which led to Mary Dempster labor. So Dunny was sure that!
he was to blame but still he didn^t confess it to anyone, neither did
he ever talk to anyone about it. Being neutral he just withdrew and did
not take a stand in the situation. He took care of Paul when he (Paul)
was quite young and also was protective of Mary which further served to
isolate him from the rest of the society who thought of Mary as a bad
influence. Though this incident occurred in an early stage of Dunny^s
life, it still shows his neutrality which remained a part of him until
his death. Dunny^s relationship with Diana is another example which
shows his neutrality. When Dunny was wounded in the war, he was put
under Diana^s care until he got back on his feet. During this time, he

There are many theories of alcoholism, and some approaches explain and treat certain alcoholics better than others. One of the common themes throughout the readings is that addicts display a range of personal and situational problems. There is no "typical" addicted personality or emotional problem (Allen, 1996). Because of these facts, it comes as no surprise that there are also no typical assessment or treatment for these individuals. For instance, a medical/disease model of alcoholism may be more useful to some alcoholics than others. The point is that instead of rigidly applying one model, a counselor's goal is to use the models that are most effective to the particular alcoholic in question.
Paul believes that everyone around him is beneath him. He is convinced that he is superior to everyone else in his school and in his neighborhood. He is even condescending to his teachers, and shows an appalling amount of contempt for them, of which they are very aware.

Franz Peter, born on 31 January 1797 was one of fourteen children born of Franz Theodore Schubert and Elisabeth Vietz, four of which survived. He received a thorough basic education; his father being a good teacher, and son being a bright student. From his father Franz also learned to play the violin, and from his brother he learned the piano. The family, indeed, was a very musical one; family "String Quartet Parties" were well known in the part of Vienna in which they lived. But soon young Franz learned all that his family had to teach him. Later, any neighbors who could play any instruments were drawn in and the quartet became a little orchestra. At nine years old, this inquisitive little boy auditioned and was accepted for a position as a chorister in the Royal Court Chapel Choir (which would later become the 'Vienna Boys' Choir). The young chorister gained the attention of Antonio Saliere, who saw to the nurture the young boy's education. After leaving the choir, he continued as a student at the school for one unhappy year. This client was given alcohol at 6 years old by her teenage sister to numb her pain. The problem of alcohol abuse has been recognized for thousands of years, but only more recently have we begun to see alcohol addiction as a treatable disorder. According to the Classical Disease Model of `Alcoholism,' habitual use of alcohol can be identified as a disease. Webster's Dictionary defines the concept of `disease' as follows: "Any departure from health presenting marked symptoms; malady; illness; disorder." Therefore, as many occurrences of alcohol excess provoke such symptoms, it is somewhat understandable that `alcoholism' is classified as a disease. The Classical Disease Model appears to offer a hopeful option. Treatment and sobriety can allow people to lead fulfilling lives. Adjacent to the notion of alcoholism as personal failure or moral deterioration, the Classical Disease Model appears to be a more desirable concept as it provides a motive for the alcoholic to seek treatment and gain sympathy, minimizing personal guilt. As alcoholism is seen as a progressive and, to an extent, hereditary illness for which those afflicted are not accountable, victims avoid being ostracized from society (Jellinek, 1960). Labeling the problem as a `disease' allows the medical profession to take responsibility for the treatment of alcoholism, which puts the problem in a more favourable light than if it were in the hands of psychologists or social workers, thus detaching the stigma connected with the problem while it is put on a par with other diseases such as diabetes or cancer. However, critics of the Classical Disease Model believe stigma helps reduce alcohol problems and aids the alcoholic. To understand alcoholism, it must first be understood what this affliction is dependent on. Alcohol is a substance that is made by the fermentation of fruits, grains, or miscellaneous other organic materials. The chemical, alcohol, is a depressant and acts on every cell in the human body. Due to this, the central nervous system, along with the pleasure centers of the brain, are affected resulting in a feeling of euphoria and a sense of well being. After repeated exposure, the brain becomes dependent on this drug to unburden itself whenever it feels the compulsion. Several factors that contribute to alcoholism are the individual’s psychology, genetics, culture, and the individual’s response to physical pain.
Alcoholism is a mental illness that is very destructive not only to an individual that has it, but also to the people that surround him or her and the community. It is a “chronic disease, progressive, and often fatal”, according to James D. Torr, author of the book called Alcoholism (19). Alcohol, when consumed, causes the person to feel pleasure and other desired effects, because of the chemicals it contains. The continuation of consuming alcohol causes the brain and the body to develop tolerance or addiction which leads to alcohol dependence or alcoholism.
In conclusion, Mary is clearly shown to have a very manipulative and sinister character because she was a cold blooded murderer who had no feelings for her husband when she killed him, and she made people believe her grieving stories to make them feel sorry for her. But, all she wanted at the end was to cover up all of the evidence so she does not get caught and go to jail.
Mary Magdalene was a woman who was a mystery to many people for centuries. She was mentioned only a handful of times in the New Testament. Even though she was only mentioned a few times she carried a lot of character. To this day there is not an extended amount of information to help support people’s thoughts and ideas about this woman.

The researchers are of the opinion that alcoholics are not “weak” or “immoral”. They have the real disease or difficulty caused by the combination of factors including environmental influence, difficulties in emotion regulation, biological make up, stress, depression, and anxiety (Marks, 2014).
