There are two books I will be comparing, Fever 1793 and The Girl Who Owned a City. The main characters are Matty, a girl in 1973, and Lisa, a futuristic character.They are alike in many ways. They are also quite different. They are both about the same age, though Lisa might be a little younger. First, how they are similar. They both have many responsibilities, though Lisa enjoys them while Matty despises them. Matty and Lisa both have to rely on their own instincts, like the time that Grandfather died and when all the adults died for Lisa. They both stand up for their own opinions, like when Matty insisted that Grandfather should be buried with a prayer (“My head throbbed to the rhythm of the shovels biting into the earth. My hands decided what to do without consulting the rest of my body. I shoved the man who spoke to me, shoved him so hard he nearly toppled into the grave. . . I ran up to him and clenched the front of his shirt . . . “He was my grandfather. You will not bury him without a prayer.” I spoke slowly, with iron force behind every word.” –Mattie, Fever 1793.) and Lisa demanded that they should fight the gangs. Firstly, there is a difference in time periods. Matty’s story is in the 1790s, while Lisa’s story was futuristic. There is also a difference in character. They both seem rebellious, but it seems Matty would not boss around a community, but Lisa would. “Because Glenbard is MINE. It belongs to ME. And I’m not letting anybody take it from me.” –Lisa, The Girl Who Owned a City. Finally, Matty seems a more caring person than Lisa. Lisa seems more concerned about the welfare of a community than the happiness and freedom of each individual person. In conclusion, Matty and Lisa are similar in many ways. However, they are also very different. I prefer Matty over Lisa, because she is more kind and less bossy. But, they were both good
