Hello. I’m here to talk to you about sustainability in Ferny Grove and whether or not it’s a sustainable community. In order to determine if Ferny Grove is a sustainable community, we must first determine what a sustainable city is. Some aspects of sustainability are: - Low pollution levels - Good waste disposal - Low energy usage - Good public transport - Takes into consideration the impacts on the environment and tries to overcome negative impacts - Offers good facilities like supermarkets and parks A few aspects that sustainable cities share are - Reduced traffic congestion. Reykjavík hopes to be entirely fossil fuel free by 2050 and instead use green energy such as hydroelectric energy. Green energy already powers a lot of Reykjavík from heating homes and swimming pools to greenhouses and street lights. Reykjavík uses an astonishing amount of renewable energy, with about 85% of its energy coming from renewable sources. It also offers a hydrogen fuelled bus service and around 90% of residents live 5 minutes away from greenspaces. As a result of this Reykjavík has the lowest NO2 levels of all the major cities in Europe stated on this graph. So, is Ferny Grove a sustainable community? Ferny Grove has a railway station and many buses. It also has a Coles supermarket, along with medical facilities and eateries. These facilities are within walking distance of many houses and thereby eliminates some of the traffic congestion and pollution released into the air. It also has parks and greenspaces which also encourages physical activity. Every neighborhood has both positive and negative situations. It is whom every choice to decide on where to live. Gentilly is a family neighborhood. Memories have been built here for centuries. It is one of the most historical places. It wouldn’t get any better than to live in a neighborhood that has great food, universities, and has tons of history.

As more countries become industrialized, our global footprint continues to grow making global warming look like a ticking time bomb. To effectively combat global warming companies are starting to reevaluate and implement practices that are less detrimental to the environment. Life Time Fitness has also joined the cause in becoming greener. The initiatives presented in this report focus on the efforts made locally in Chanhassen Minnesota, where the corporate headquarters resides. As the local media specialist for Life Time Fitness, I will focus on my stakeholders, the residents of Chanhassen throughout the planning and execution of our project. To my advantage, Chanhassen is already ahead of other cities and counties in terms of their green knowledge and initiative that are already in place.
In conclusion, brownfield redevelopment supports the continual goal of sustainability through utilization, incorporation, preservation and remediation. For instance, brownfield sites offer developers a chance to utilize the existing infrastructure, which lowers municipal costs. Additionally, developers can incorporate ancient and modern technologies that create more efficient buildings thus reducing energy use. Moreover, with opportunities to grow within cities, there is less pressure to develop greenfields. Furthermore, through the required process of remediation, environmental hazards are removed or prevented. Overall, brownfield redevelopment saves money, reduces energy usage, protects greenfields and removes critical dangers to the surrounding environment thus moving towards a more sustainable society.
Instilling this new way of energy usage into off-grid communities will inevitably increase the state of living for those in cities and other well populated areas. However, there are several ways to cut GHG emissions, such as reducing emissions from automotive engines, industrial processes and livestock. These reduction process require advanced technology and Iceland is improving its technology to accomplish its goals (Iceland’s Climate Change Strategy, 2007). To accomplish the objectives mentioned above, Iceland is improving its infrastructure and carbon sequestration inventory to fulfill its obligations that were mentioned at the Kyoto Protocol. Also, the government is attempting to increase carbon sequestration through revegetation, wetland reclamation and afforestation. Revegetation will not only help remove carbon from the atmosphere but also will help reduce the incidence of soil erosions. Lastly, the government is preparing for adaptation to climate change since the global warming is inevitable for some extent. Countries on Earth are interconnected and interdependent of each other. Therefore, it does not stop the global warming if Iceland alone is making effort. Water provides a very valuable resource. We use dams built to run water through turbines and produce electricity. There are many advantages and disadvantages to hydropower, though there are more advantages. It is reasonable inexpensive to maintain, and is a clean source. There are issues with dams blocking fish swimming in the river, but there are ways to help them. Hydropower is well balanced between the electricity needs and the needs of the environment.
