Hello. I’m here to talk to you about sustainability in Ferny Grove and whether or not it’s a sustainable community. In order to determine if Ferny Grove is a sustainable community, we must first determine what a sustainable city is. Some aspects of sustainability are: - Low pollution levels - Good waste disposal - Low energy usage - Good public transport - Takes into consideration the impacts on the environment and tries to overcome negative impacts - Offers good facilities like supermarkets and parks A few aspects that sustainable cities share are - Reduced traffic congestion. This can be achieved by encouraging public transport and carpooling. - Using storm water efficiently by collecting it and using it on gardens and setting up hydroelectric facilities to use the water and turn it into electricity. - …show more content…

Reykjavík hopes to be entirely fossil fuel free by 2050 and instead use green energy such as hydroelectric energy. Green energy already powers a lot of Reykjavík from heating homes and swimming pools to greenhouses and street lights. Reykjavík uses an astonishing amount of renewable energy, with about 85% of its energy coming from renewable sources. It also offers a hydrogen fuelled bus service and around 90% of residents live 5 minutes away from greenspaces. As a result of this Reykjavík has the lowest NO2 levels of all the major cities in Europe stated on this graph. So, is Ferny Grove a sustainable community? Ferny Grove has a railway station and many buses. It also has a Coles supermarket, along with medical facilities and eateries. These facilities are within walking distance of many houses and thereby eliminates some of the traffic congestion and pollution released into the air. It also has parks and greenspaces which also encourages physical activity. Not only does Ferny Grove have multiple greenspaces like parks but has also maintained its greenery along the sides of roads and
