In the past, white women had been in a considerable part of slavery. White women are one of the many reasons why slavery happened. Slavery would not had arised if white women did not do anything to support it. Since women were separated by their races and skin color, neither the slave women nor the white women showed any feminism to each other. Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. In the past, the only people that did not have equal rights were the slaves. This was another reason why there were not strong advocates of feminism. Since white women had more rights than their slaves that they were fine with not having the same rights as their husband’s. Men’ were the only ones that were allowed to own a house. Women were not allowed to own property at all. This was the reason why Tom Weylin decides to marry Miss Hannah. Tom was willing to marry Miss Hannah even if she was more intelligent than him because she had a large house that she could not own. Since women did not have a lot of rights as men, they were not allowed to get a job. They would have to be dependent on their husband. Their husband would work while the wife would just stay home and be a housewife. It was unfair that women were treated unequally because they would always be wrong even if their facts were correct. When Miss Hannah passes away, Tom knew that he had everything he needed so he decided to marry Margaret since she was pretty and dumb. He was able to control Margaret since she was dumb and would do anything he says. Even though Miss Hannah gave Tom everything he needed like a house, he did not have a lot of power towards her because she was educated. White women felt like that they had the most power when slavery was around. This made them feel more superior and free. If slavery was not around, Margaret would not have a way to release her anger when Tom Weylin was upsetting her. “I’d seen Margaret Weylin slap one of [the slaves’ children] hard across the face.”(Butler 85) was how Dana had described Margaret’s actions when she was upset. Every time Margaret would slap the slave children, she felt like she would have power. Margaret would always get upset when Tom Weylin would rape his slaves because she knows that she could not stop him from raping them.
