The female population is much lower than where it is supposed to be. The discrimination and neglect of girls results in the death of millions of girls. The unjust common practices of killing newborn daughters called female infanticide are spread amongst many cultures. This practice is used in a vast range of places based on the location and cultural reasons. Lack of education, economic resources and selective abortion, all leads to the unlawful killing of infant females. Infanticide happens to “restrict poverty and population.” The only way to stop it is education and equal opportunities to economic independence and jobs. In many nations, particularly in China and India, the three dangerous words heard at the birth of a child are: “It’s a girl.” Low value is associated with the birth of females, resulting in the gendercide that is still occurring today. Infanticide can result in the imbalance of sexes within the population of these societies, creating more of a divided between females and males. There are many reasons that are factors in the gendercide. Families feel that having a daughter is useless because when they become adults and get married, they will no longer be able to contribute to the family. Most households count on their sons to take care of the family when the parents grow to the age where they cannot work anymore. Female infanticide has been around for a long time. Under the One Child Policy (1979) each household is only allowed to have one child. The tradition in which is deeply rooted in the Chinese society is that most parents want their first child to be a boy. By having a son, it means that they will be able to provide for the elderly. A lot of the cases, a baby are killed because of the high pressure from the government and local policies to not have more than one child. To many families having a girl is an unnecessary expense.
