SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN INDIA A social problem has many definitions. One way to define is that is a social condition/issue which has negative effects on an individual, our social and our physical world. A social problem does not have to be experienced by every individual to be called a problem, it comes from acknowledging that the problem exists and that a particular social condition affects a greater percentage of the population. We as sociologists and psychologists need to be able to face the one-sided reality of a social condition and need to address it as a social problem. India, the population of which is estimated to be 1.27 billion also ranks 2nd in largest population and 33 in population density. The social problems in India in the new …show more content…

Female foeticide has become a disgraceful and shocking reality of this nation. For centuries, families across many parts of India have look upon the male child as the superlative of the two sexes. A male child is seen as a blessing in the Indian society and since years people have made lavish offerings and numerous prayers in hopes for getting a son. These beliefs continue to remain even though times have changed and now much of the inequality is reducing. The Indian society recognizes a insightful faith in every individual’s right to life and dignity but this rights are dishonored when it comes to women and children in this society. This practice proves to be dangerous not only to the woman herself but also to the rest of us around her. The impact this practice has on the society is dangerous not only to the women but to everyone in it. Demographers have warned that in the future in twenty years the nation will have to face a shortage of girls as brides as the sex ratio is quickly becoming unfavorable. This practice is also causing an increase in crimes and violence towards women. Women are more likely to be exploited, molested and also raped as an obvious result. Awareness on this situation should be made and people who want to determine the sex of their child should be punished severely. Laws have been passed in the Indian Penal Code to punish any person who tries to determine the sex of the child. The society needs to understand that it needs the girl child as much as it needs the boy child. There was no past without the female and there will be no future without the girl
