During my freshman year, with my confirmation class at church we had many service opportunities available to us; one which I particularly took part in was our semi-annual church blood drive. During the drive, I signed participants in and helped direct people prior to and after giving blood. Some other various events I volunteered at was our monthly pancake breakfast, the parish Christmas party, and I also went to Feed My Starving Children with my church group to help fill boxes. I volunteered on November 8, 2015 from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. It felt comfortable to volunteer somewhere I'm familiar with. I go to this temple every Sunday and attend religion classes that helped me during my volunteering. I am also familiar with all the people that I worked with, but this activity helped me connect with them and we got to work together for a common goal. Some of the jobs I was in charge of doing were standing at a game booth for the girls where I would teach them a little about hinduism and then let them play a game.
However, most of my volunteer work comes from outside of the school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc. For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer for the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me.

I chose to do my service learning project at Feed My Starving Children. I chose this service learning project because I had prior knowledge and experience by doing it with my family and church. Feed My Starving Children has been a huge impact to those who have participated in this service experience because their mission is to pack meals that go to very hungry children around the world. Being from a single parent family, it is hard for us to not be concerned about where the money for food is coming from, yet we have food on our tables for everyday meals. Therefore, I can’t imagine what it is like for those who experience hunger.

I started volunteering at the food bank and the soup kitchen in grade 9, with a nudge from my friend. During my time as a volunteer, I would ask for donations and collect any non-perishable food items. Later I would go to the Soup Kitchen, to help cook some of these items and serve them to those in need. I just have to make sure the house doesn’t burn down while moms gone. Babysitting isn't as easy as it seems. I learned the hard way. Mom asked me to baby sit my little brother and sister once while she went to run a few Arends. I thought ok sure I got this, but I was wrong and would soon find that out later.
For my service project, I was assigned to go to Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). When I signed up, I was told that I would be packing food for children but when we arrived at FMSC that Saturday, I realized that we were doing much more than that. At FMSC, one of the staff members gave us a little background information about the type of children we would be helping. The images resembled the children you see in those advertisements about children in third world countries, but these images actually meant something because I knew that today, I would personally be helping these children. We worked in teams to pack rice, soy, vitamin mix, and dry vegetables into packages for children in multiple countries who were not privileged
The first place I volunteered for was the Habitat for Humanity Restore. This is a donation center that sells used appliances, furniture, and home accessories at a lower price. They are addressing our landfill problems. Most people do not consider donating their used appliances or furniture and they would just throw it out instead. This adds to the already negative pile-ups in landfills. The U.S alone is already the number one trash producing country in the world producing 1,609 pounds of trash per person per year (Solid Waste& Landfill Facts). The Habitat for Humanity Restore addresses this problem by encouraging the community to donate to their store instead of throwing out used furniture and appliances. Donating used
An anonymous speaker once said, “Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate.” Although many people have never done it, babysitting is considered a difficult task by many. Individuals who feel babysitting is simple generally do not consider the fact that the babysitter must often take on multiple roles. Babysitters must: watch the child or children without ever becoming overly frustrated, get to know the those being watched because not every kid is the same, or they may even become the driver or the cook for the night. Babysitting is different for every child and babysitter, and different families have different rules.
Responsibility is an important thing when it comes to babysitting. It all started during the 09’ summer vacation, when I wanted to babysit for some extra money to go shopping with my friends that were going to come visit me all the way from Canada. I knew that my neighbors were going out to San Francisco for about six hours, and couldn’t find a babysitter yet. So, I asked my mom if I could go next door and ask them. She said I could, and I had my first summer job.
I didn’t really participated in any of services that my parents did, but I did participated raising fund for cancer patients in the school by helping in a car wash and raised fund. The money we raised was for the children and I felt great that somehow I was able to help them a little.
