Hello everyone, Livingston Cares is sponsoring a Feed My Starving Children event at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church on October 24 from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. According to their website: "Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and we ship these meals to our distribution partners." Volunteers under 18 must meet a 5 students to 1 adult ratio, so we will need some people 18 and older willing to volunteer. Please email Kathleen Isenegger by Wednesday, September 23 to let her know that you or some one you know is 18 or older and interested in participating.
In contrast, according to Barnes, Miller, and McKinnon (2012), mentoring relationships can be more structured and “formal” as a result of being organized though actual agencies verses informal connections where the relationship organically develops, for example with a coach and athlete or teacher and student. An article published in Issues in Science and Technology, stated that thirty-two percent of individuals in the United States are living below the poverty threshold. A study conducted in Living Below the Poverty Line, found that forty five percent of individuals and or families obtain income that is not substantial enough to meet basic needs of the individual and or family. In this same study it was founded that of these individuals thirty nine percent of these individuals were adults but fifty five of these individuals living above the poverty threshold were children.
In efforts to eliminate hunger in the Austin Community, Hope Church operates a food pantry that provides food and supplies to local residents within the 60651 and 60644 postal zip codes. The Pantry is operated by a friendly volunteer staff who’s there to be a blessing to others! The hope food pantry is a non-profit organization which distributes food to a variety of community agencies which serve the people in need. Last year alone, over 1 million pounds of food was distributed throughout our community. The hope food pantry also host special events to raise money and food for our community. For every dollar raised, the food pantry can provide ten meals to the needy.

From what was just receiving volunteer hours with Rockdale Emergency Relief by graciously assisting with the preparation of 150 sack lunches daily, opened the door of a returned passion. One after another, I was filling multiple brown paper bags with a sandwich, bag of chips, a Capri Sun, and a healthy fruit snack while preparing to make my rounds for delivery to my assigned neighborhoods within Rockdale County. At each stop, I will never forget the innocent face of each child that waited for this delivery. I felt as if I were driving an ice-cream truck as all the children stumbled over one another running out of their homes towards us, Summer Lunch Program volunteers, with joy anticipating their sack lunches. Questions ran through my head wondering how one could be so ecstatic about what I had prepared in each bag. It was not candy, ice-cream, nor toys, but it was proper nourishment to each growing body reaching for their meal. As an important factor to their daily function, I could comprehend by their eagerness how much this delivery meant to each child and their parents or caregivers, and that made my heart melt. In response to the recent failure of the international community to prevent the famine crisis in the Horn of Africa since July 2011, Suzanne Dvorak the chief executive of Save the Children wrote that, “We need to provide help now. But we cannot forget that these children are wasting away in a disaster that we could - and should - have prevented” she added, “The UN estimates that every $1 spent in prevention saves $7 in emergency spending.” (Dvorak, 2011).
I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. The Food Bank acts as a storage unit and distribution facility for smaller agencies and organizations such as schools, homeless shelters, churches, and day
However, some critics argue that it has little to do with food insecurity; rather, it is the outcomes from food charities expanding their operations. They also contend that people are seizing the opportunity of food made freely available but by contrast, UK food charities purport that they deliver emergency food relief in response to economic hardship and food insecurity as a result of cuts to local authority expenditure and central welfare spending (Lambie-Mumford, 2014).
The mission of the agency is to “provide for the needs of hungry people by gathering and sharing quality food with dignity, compassion, and education”. Volunteers were there to restock the shelves and bag the food for the clients. The staff duties consisted of interviewing clients and making sure the facility ran smoothly. Harvest Hope serves a diverse population residing within Lexington, West Columbia, and Cayce.
This organization was founded in 1987, so it has been around for 29 years. All the people that came to help were volunteers to pack meals for malnourished children around the world. Feed My Starving Children has seven permanent food-packing sites, which three are in Minnesota, three in Illinois, and one in Arizona. Some of the countries that these meals have been distributed amongst are Haiti, Kenya, Philippines, Costa Rica, and many more. These meals that are distributed got to orphanages, schools, refugee camps, and malnourished centers around the world. Feed My Starving Children or FMSC, for short, has a main food supporter, which is MannaPack Rice that is packed into small pouches and is only made with boiling water. The formula that goes in the pouch consists of four components which are rice, soy, vitamins, and dehydrated vegetables. These ingredients improve the health, growth, and physical well-being of the children, so that they would not be in danger of starvation anymore in the world.
About Teen Feed Imagine a 17-year-old girl whose parents have kicked her out. She has no food or money and needs to find a job. She begins to look into food banks and shelters that could give her the help that she needs. One day she comes across a non-profit organization that claims to feed 13-25 year olds every night of the week. She finds that Teen Feed has access to shelters, support programs and more.
I chose to participate in this work in order to spread the spirit of volunteerism. The idea for this group was already in place when I enrolled at the high school and sought participation in a service club; however, the organization was rather inactive. I was inspired to become more involved as I reached out individually to local organizations in need of volunteers, including the local school corporation and Christian ministries.
Food for the Hungry works towards turning these into healthy, productive places for children to grow up in. FH is one of the key four humanitarian organizations we are considering here. Food for the Hungry previously focused on food distribution and economic development programs, but now increasingly focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention. At present, Food for the Hungry is; • Establishing savings groups in Bangladesh which helps women start businesses to leave poverty and injustice behind • Training farmers to use plants that do well in harsh climates and agricultural techniques that develop large crop yields • Food for the Hungry care groups reduce child mortality in communities by as much as 62 percent • Working with churches, leader and families in communities worldwide to bring Christ’s love and truth • Working with communities throughout the world to provide clean water
Slide 1- what is child poverty: When you hear the term child poverty what comes to mind? ( first ask the audiences opinion, then state my own opinion) Child poverty denies children with the basic needs to survive, expand and flourish, it also deprives children from having equal opportunities such as attending school, having a roof over their head or having a warm meal to eat. Children that unfortunately face poverty have a higher chance of being abused, discriminated or exploited due to their poor living circumstances. "Poverty shows a strong association with child maltreatment, particularly neglected. The NIS-3 study, for example found that children from families with an annual incomes below $15000 in 1993 were 22 times more likely to be harmed by child abuse compare to a families with an annual income above $30000." Ensuring that all members of society are taken care of and are treated respectfully is crucial to ensuring the well being of society as a whole. To say that those less fortunate should be left to fend for themselves, or that it is not our responsibility as citizens and responsible members of society to assist those in need of help is simply selfish. How would you feel if you were the one in need of assistance? We the people that make up society must contribute our time, resources and effort to help others who are less privileged and more susceptible to sickness due to their living conditions and the situation that they are stuck in. Ultimately, society stands to benefit when we take care of those members of society that are in need of shelter, food, financial assistance etc. Furthermore, in doing so, we are also keeping our community safe by eliminating the need for those less fortunate to turn to crime as a way to feed themselves and their family. One can only be pushed so far until self-preservation becomes the most important factor to a person, thus pushing those who are hungry to resort to stealing, robbing and other such crimes to survive.
