When we’re walking on the street, the lives that we walk by are vast stories that we don’t know about. One’s life is a whole different story from another’s. These tales can be dark and dangerous or they could be inspiring and happy. Jamie Ford tells us a story of two individual’s lives in, Songs of Willow Frost, that are bitter and hard to read. Liu Song’s story is one of the toughest stories that you will ever experience. She runs into many problems as her life goes on. From the novel, we learn that life is tough and giving up is not an option. Throughout the book, Ford uses many literary devices to give depth and allow us to enjoy his novel. Failure is what controls my mindset and what I do. I ponder on if I should raise my hand in class or if I am running the right play in football many a times. William and Willow’s concern about failure controlled their minds as well. Willow had insecurities and doubt on if she should tell someone she had been raped while William worried if his mom would even accept him. Lack of success is what everyone is afraid of, thus this would connect to many CHS readers allowing them to understand the characters in the novel with deeper understanding. Another theme that emerges from the novel and relates to me is friendship. That pact between my friends and I are what keeps my going. Charlotte was a true friend of William. William gave Charlotte sight while Charlotte gave William hope as he tried to find his mom. Sadly Charlotte ended up in a happier place looking down on him. Songs of Willow Frost was a very dark novel every chapter you read. Even when the story had some lighthearted scenes that provided me with some respite, I knew that I had to brace for the worst later on. I wish I could change that in the novel by making it more cheerful. Maybe Colin, Willow’s comely friend, even stays and marries Willow and maybe they could’ve even had an opulent life together! But I know that is a ridiculous change and the novel is very favorable the way it
