As Bill Cosby has said, "In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure." When you're scared that you're going to fail it could hinder or motivate you to reach your goals. Fear of failure motivates one to accomplish their goals because of a passion to succeed. The motivation to reach our goals with fear of failure are affected by what we are passionate about and the opportunities we take.
Fear motivates one to reach their goals towards their passion due to being afraid of failing. Michael Jordan has said, "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. He used that fear of failing and fear of doing what he's done in his past games to improve and try even harder and which that resulted in ample NBA achievements. Similarly, in Richard Preston's, The Hot Zone, shows an example of how fear of failure has motivated one who was passionate about researching the Ebola virus to reach their goals, "It could multiply in many different kinds of meat. It was an invasive life form, devastating and promiscuous. It showed a kind of obscenity you see only in nature, an obscenity so extreme that it dissolves imperceptibly into beauty"(136). Even though the virus was dangerous and fatal, researchers would continue to work with it because of how extraordinary and profound it was. With their fear of failure of death and discover, the passion of researching the virus motivated the researchers to risk it and have the courage to put their lives in danger. Munir Daair in the Ted Talk also talks about what role failure has when reaching your goals, "The drive to succeed despite failures is what distinguishes the ambitious from the ordinary"(5:36-5:43). What to take from what Manir is saying, is that you must get rid of the thought of failures as a motive to take opportunities and reach your goals. Use that fear of failure as a way to guide you but only as that. Don't think of it as a fear or a reminder of a failure, think of it as a motivator to success. In The Hot Zone, a nurse had showed an example of when fear of failure causes her to miss opportunities, "Nurse Mayinga had been caring for Sister M.E. when the nun had died in the bloodstained room. She may have been splattered with the nun's blood or with black vomit. At any rate, Nurse Mayinga developed a headache and fatigue. She knew she was becoming sick, but she did not want to admit to herself what it was. She came from a poor but ambitious family, and she had received a scholarship to go to college in Europe.
