Factors that Determine Whether the Athens Olympics are Viewed as a Success or Failure

Athens 2004 will be judged on a strict criteria by it's billions of

viewers worldwide, the criteria they apply determine whether they

believe Athens 2004 was a success or a failure. I will now proceed to

discuss the factors that will feature in the criteria.

The many factors include the events security, the events organisation,

how memorable the games were, the game's attendance, how dominant the

drug doping stories were and (to many the most important) how well

their nation did, and this is the factor I will first discuss.

For many viewers if Britain does well the games were a success, and if

they do poorly then it was a failure. Many of these viewers do not

even consider major key issues such as security and attendance they

simply see it as clear cut as how many medals their nation won.

Therefore Considering Team GB won 30 medals, the best tally since Los

Angeles in 1984 it will probably be considered as a success but in

comparison to the USA's 100+ plus medals it seems hardly as

impressive. But in British Olympic history terms it was the best

result for a long while and so many viewers are happy with the final

outcome. These viewers will view the games as a success in comparison

to the viewers who look at the wider picture considering other

criteria. These people consider the games as a whole not simply

Britain's final medal tally. These people will be vital in deciding

conclusively and fairly whether the Athens 2004 Olympic games were a

success or a failure.

A huge factor that decides whether the games were a success or not are

the overall security and events that happen during the 2 weeks it is

staged. For example Atlanta '96 had a major incident involving a bomb

and resulted in casualties, this Olympics were considered unsuccessful

because the police and event organisers failed to recognise the threat

of terrorism, however in wake of recent events Greece were prepared
