Nowadays, the world is undergoing permanent change due to the rapid progression of science and technology, which is reflected in the attitudes and behaviors of its users. It is difficult to escape the influence of technology on every aspect of our daily lives. However, smartphones and advanced gadgets cannot survive alone without instant messaging applications such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Recently, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg acquired WhatsApp.Inc to combine two of the most famous platforms with a large number of users (Bushey, 2014). Although Facebook and WhatsApp are both social communication techniques, each application has its own unique daily use and distinctive flavor that attracts more users to their platforms. Facebook was established by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 as a platform that he could use to share events and photos with his college mates at the campus of Harvard University, USA.
Alternatively, WhatsApp was established in 2009 by former Yahoo! staff Jan Koum and Brian Acton. WhatsApp is a messaging application that permits users to exchange messages without the necessity to pay for SMS service, but users need to have internet service on their cellular phones (Wagner, 2014). Besides, it is compatible with the majority of smartphones. Therefore, users can establish groups, send each other unlimited images, videos, and audio messages for free. As stated by The Daily Telegraph, WhatsApp transfers about 20 billion messages on a daily basis, which is twice the size of Facebook's daily messaging traffic transferred by Facebook Messenger (Sibi, 2014). To use WhatsApp, it is configured on the user's phone number without the need to have an email ID, similar to Facebook. However, when installation is complete, WhatsApp contacts the main server and compares the contacts in the user's phone. It automatically adds the people who are already using WhatsApp to the "Contact List" of the user's phone.
