This chapter reviews some related literature and studies relevant to the problems of the researchers. The review deals with both foreign and local literature and studies which revolve around the alcohol consumption of heavy drinkers and the three determinants of self control.
In the article of Herbert Fingarette (2013) alcoholics do have significant control over their drinking, and they do respond to circumstances. Opposite to what the public has led to believe, this is not disputed by the experts. Alcohol does not automatically trigger uncontrolled drinking because of the fact that heavy drinker has different fears, values and strategies.

There are two types of locus of control the one is the external locus of control wherein the person exhibit less responsibility over his life. And they are being likened to be selfish individuals. In the internal locus of control the person believe that no one is responsible for their lives. They are being labelled as “control freaks” (Mckoy 2009).
Learned helplessness refers to a person mental state where they feel completely powerless over their own life situation. This means that they become reluctant to take action to improve a situation, because they have already decided that it will not make a lot difference. One case of this is an individual who is addicted to alcohol. Even when they believe that this alcohol use is making their life complicated, they are still feeling helpless to recover the situation.
In the article of Lum and Caetano (2009) noted that both Filipino-Americans follow the Japanese-Americans in terms of its heavy drinking, while due to gender differences only 20% of women consume alcohol. Moreover, ethnicity group’s religion or philosophy is an important factor for a group’s drinking practices or self discipline.
