Volunteering is helpful to many people around the world for many reasons like some people needing medical help, some needing food, some needing an education, and some needing a place to live. Volunteering should not be something that is mandatory, but it should be done because people want to help others in need. So when people volunteer they are mostly volunteering because they respect and want to help others who need help. The people who volunteer out of respect and wanting to help others are motivated to work as hard as they can. While the people who are less motivated are the people who are volunteering to help themselves instead. There are many reasons that people would volunteer to help themselves, but a few are to be able to learn a new skill, help their resume, and to be more involved. While most people volunteer out of the kindness of their heart, other people will volunteer to be able to be to learn more. Some volunteers learn by doing something they have not done yet. Volunteering can help resumes by getting to try out various jobs and different organizations. Because of this people would have a wide variety of different job experiences. Since volunteers have done various jobs with different experiences they will learn different skills that will help them in the job of their choosing. If a player in college football commits an intentional helmet to helmet hit, the penalty is an ejection. If college football can input this penalty, couldn’t the NFL? We see that former football players who suffered many concussions over their playing careers, have long lasting effects. Some current players feel as though that they can’t control where their hits land and injuries are just a part of the game. Some fans feel as though all these penalties are taking the fun away the game. Former NFL players are an example of what helmet to helmet hits can do.
It helps a person make new friends and it is good for increasing the number of people one can fall back to when they need someone to listen to their problems. It is also helpful with building one’s social and relationship skills. “[Volunteer service] gives [a person] the opportunity to practice and develop social skills” (Saisan and Smith). Another benefit is that it is good for one’s physical and mental well-being. “Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.”
My main focus on volunteering is to help and/or improve other individuals lives. Whether it’s a small thing like shoveling elderly neighbors driveways during the winter or a bigger thing like running youth group at the local church and leading prayers. Not only do the people I help get joy from it, but helping others surely puts joy in my life too. Also, with the knowledge I have acquired through high school, tutoring others is something I enjoy doing because helping others understand something difficult is very important. During school, assisting teachers with going to grab printed papers or picking up excess garbage in the cafeteria after lunch are many of the things I do to improve the school and the people in it such as students and faculty staff. Volunteering is a large part many nonprofit organizations. A volunteer is choosing to donate their personal time and resources to the cause they support. By volunteering, an individual has an outlet to express their values or embrace a particular culture within pout society.
My son asked me the other day why I volunteer, what do I get from it? He only volunteers to get this service hour for National Honor Society, so it will look good on his college application. But why do I volunteer, some of it is for my resume so it looks good for my next job. But I also volunteer at my church, in my neighborhood, other community service projects with family and friends which has not reflection on my job. For me, most of it is for the feel good factor, helping others, like helping the neighborhood have great social events so they feel connected on one another. Helping people that need food and children at church become better adults. Helping out my IFMA Chapter to support education opportunities and programs for our members.
By requiring volunteering, students may not put effort into their work. Some people tend to not work hard when they are made to do tasks they initially did not want to perform; a poor performance is the result of this. This is not acceptable in volunteering. Volunteering requires effort. A bad performance affects those in the community who are being helped. For example, if a student chooses to volunteer at a nursing home, they must help the senior citizens with enthusiasm and aid their needs. For example, someone from the middle class volunteering their time at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter to help a group of people who have been given a hard path in life at that given time and through the help that that volunteer is giving, maybe the several underprivileged individuals will be able to rise above the poverty line. That is the ideology of that volunteer, to give their time and both make others feel better and make themselves feel better about themselves. Another value that pertains to why volunteer work is so important is Individualism. This is because of what was discussed earlier, with the employer looking so highly on extra work done by potential employees. If they have a significant amount of volunteer work on their resumé, it will make them stand out from others because they have accomplished more than the other employees and it shows a caring side to that employee.
The final way that volunteering is a good idea is it helps you be a better role model to the younger people in your life that looks up to you. The best feeling is knowing that the people that look up to your are getting the best example to admir. Having kids or being an older sibling is a good example of why you should want to be a good role model. Providing a good example to others is an amazing opportunity because it also sets the example of the future. Showing the next generation a better way is improving our future way of life.
The more people that work together and help others within their community, the more the community will strive to be alive and up going. The people within are the people that determine the well being of the community as a whole. The more people that do good, the more the people will feel good. Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
A common misconception about volunteering is that it only helps the cause. Often times that aspect is the only part that is highlighted when the topic of donating time comes up.
