I believe that kids should not pay to play sports because if their families do not have a lot of money, they can’t afford to participate.So what if they are really good at that sport and can’t afford it? Perhaps you ask, What will the coach do now?, you just lost a star player just because he had very little money. So if was a coach I would take that 65.00 to100.00 dollars off hoping it will bring back the kids that were playing in the first places. It was so hard and it was fun we ran and worked out and run and run until we puked after we ran the miles and that was my summer and some into the winter and when we got to where we were doing really practices then we were at the middle of the chain. In my opinion, paying those student athletes in the highest revenue earning sports will encourage them to do better in the classroom. There is an uncertain future for college athletes, very few reach the professional level, and these student-athletes are sacrificing their time and bodies to reach this goal. Underclassmen are keen on making the leap to become professional athletes because the graduation rates of college athletes are not very encouraging. With no extra money for these student-athletes, they may also turn to fast (usually illegal) ways to earn money, such as selling drugs. So paying student-athletes might be a way to keep these athletes eligible and safe.
Student-athletes should not be paid to play and the amateur status should remain as it has for generations. Student-athletes have not matured enough at this stage of life to be able to handle all of the additional responsibilities that would be forced upon them with the professional status. The onset of club athletics, showcase sports, and college skills camps in the recent decade has caused more athletes to get noticed outside of high school athletics. This puts less emphasis on high school teams and getting noticed during the correlating season in high school. Parents are forking out money to club and showcase teams during the offseason from high school sports and come time for the high school’s season, parent’s wallets are burned out and they are giving less money to booster clubs to support the high school team. Local showcase and travel teams in the Greensboro, NC area are charging $1500-$4500 annually to provide players the opportunity to develop and become a better athlete in their respective sport. When the high school season approaches and booster clubs are offering fundraising opportunities, parents are becoming less cooperative in participating because they have already drained most of their money in the offseason (“Miller”).
College athletes should not be paid it will ruin college sports forever. Some people believe that college athletes should be paid by the school because of all of the hard work they put in however they shouldn’t be paid because there is no fair way to pay every college athlete. In my experiences as a student athlete, I can vouch for those in favor of paying student athletes. Because I need more money to help me through college, I had to apply for financial aid and eventually received a grant. There are many additional expenses I have encountered in just my first semester as a student athlete. An estimate of how much money I spend each semester is around 100 dollars. These expenses range from shampoo to eating out when the cafeteria is closed. The amount of time I spend as an athlete each week takes up at least 20 hours. The combination of time spent for basketball and personal needs demonstrates why student athletes should receive money. I’m amazed at how many things require money from my own pocket. The bottom line is student athletes need to start getting paid even if it’s minimal.
