The Bill of Rights and Responsibilities Michaella Gomes What were the intentions of the founding fathers when they created the Bill of Rights? The United States was created because the British were abusing the rights of the colonists. When the Constitution was created the people were worried that the government would be too powerful, just like the King. They believed they wouldn't have any rights so, they created the Bill of rights to protect the people. The Bill of rights protects the people’s freedoms and rights from the government. Firstly, each amendment in the bill of rights is a guarantee that the people's rights are protected from the government. The first Amendment protects the right to speech, press, assembly, religion and to petition the government. This means people can insult the government without being detained. On the other hand, this Amendment stops the government from forcing a religion onto the people.Specifically, they are free to worship or not worship any religion. Having a public trial prevents the accused from getting as sentence that is unfair, unnecessary or unusual. It is important to have an impartial jury because if the jury all deeply dislike the person accused they may convict him/her wrongly. In the eighth amendment ensures that a person accused will not receive excessive bail or a cruel and unusual punishment. The ninth amendment ensures that the amendments in the Bill of Rights will not and can not be used to deny anyone their rights. The final amendment, number 10, protects state rights.
