Is this crime one that is more or less likely to be reported? Explain. Sexual assaults and rape crimes are not likely to be reported for many reasons. A lot of the time a sexual assault occurs, the victim goes through a lot of emotions all at once. These emotions can include anger, fear, and depression. These emotions can be overwhelming and can scare the victim into not reporting the crime. The victim can also feel afraid of reporting the crime because they believe the perpetrator might come after him/her again. Victims may also feel embarrassed and ashamed about going public about the assault. Due to the assault, victims feel betrayed and unsafe. They often do not know who to tell about the assault and whether
The physical ones can include bruising, bleeding, broken bones, low weight, addiction to drugs, and health problems. The emotional impact can include PTSD, anxiety, depression, and lack of empathy; conduct disorders, being involved in bullying, and even delinquency.
What may be some long term reactions/impacts of the crime? The long-term impacts of child abuse and neglect can be detrimental. The victims of child abuse usually have a continuous pattern of mental disorders. These can include PTSD, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, unhealthy relationships, lack of empathy, and even promiscuity. Not every victim of child abuse becomes an attacker, but most attackers tend to have been abused as children.
Who might blame the victim and why? The victim might blame the circumstances such as the environment or any substances used prior to the abuse occurring. The victim might also blame other adults that are not knowingly not putting a stop to the abuse. Nonetheless, the victim might also blame him/herself. The victim may being to think the abuse is his/her fault. This is common in all forms of abuse, but children are more naive and can be manipulated much easier than adults. They may be consumed by irritability, suspicion, and trust issues and have behavioural patterns, including paranoia, dishonesty, and impulsive behaviour. Others develop personality disorders similar to PTSD. The long-term effects of child abuse are also shown through the movie character Will Hunting who suffered child abuse in foster care and now is an impulsive man who refuses to reach out for help. Although, there are exceptions for negative development in those who have experienced childhood trauma.
Child neglect and abuse is an unfortunate reality for many children today. It can have significant developmental impacts on children until they are an adult. Unfortunately it is not noticed until the damage is already done. Parents are the ones that are supposed to take care of their child. The consequences of a child getting mistreated young may endure long after the neglect occurs. People having children and not ready to be parents. Scaring the child for life because they decided that is was fun to beat on their child and abuse them mentally, and some even sexually. The effects can appear in all aspects of life, rather it is psychological or behavioral. There are three main effects of neglect and abuse that can range from minor physical injuries, not getting along with others, or can become aggressive and affect them later on in life.
Sexual assault is the act of sexual intercourse without consent of the other person according to New South Wales Consolidation Act of 1900 (Austlii 2011) and is also described by the Australian Standard Offence Classification as ‘non-consensual’ acts or intents of sexual nature (ASOC 2008, p. 31) has become one of the most predominate crimes creating social harm in Australia. Social harm is defined as the negative influence through consequences impacting from the individual to the living conditions of the surrounding public (Cain & Howe 2008, p. 26). Sexual assault poses a social threat to all aspects of community, spreading insecurity in the 9000 victims across Australia and 1900 victims in NSW alone as indicated in the Australian Bureau of Statistics Crime Victimisation Report (ABS 2011, p. 40). This is supported by the victimization rate of all sexually assaulted victims between ages 10 to 14 being 4 times greater than all the other age groups (ABS 2010). Another major issue within the boundaries of sexual assault is that it holds one of the lowest prosecution rates with only 1 in 10 incidents able to prosecute the offender as guilty (Fitzgerald 2006, Pg. 1). The abundance of statistics and reports conducted all imply that sexual assault is still a predominate issue of crime within Australia.

Sexual assault is an under-reported crime. It is difficult for women to report sexual abuse but it is far more difficult for men. For males, it is exponentially more difficult to report such crimes, thus making it more difficult for victim advocates to present an environment where victims feel comfortable coming forward to report sex crimes. To this end, according to RAINN (2009) male victims of sex related crimes may find it easier to make a first report anonymously, giving them the opportunity to speak to an objective list, specifically trained to address specific and complex emotional issues related to this crime.

It is estimated that 1 in every 6 women in the US has been or will be victims of sexual assault in their lifetime. The risks of sexual assault increase on college campuses. Women ages 18-24 who are enrolled in college are 3 times more likely than women in general to suffer from sexual violence (RAINN, 2016). One would think that with all these women being sexually assaulted, one would hear more about it, or perhaps the police stations would constantly be busy. This is not the case. Sexual assault is one of the most unreported crimes, with 68% still being left unreported (RAINN, 2016). This could be because of every 100 rapists, only 2 will spend a day in jail. Of the 32 out of 100 that would be reported, only 7 are referred to an arrest (RAINN, 2016). Why would men or women want to report sexual assault when the system that is supposed to protect them fails so often, and why does this system continue to fail?

The psychological effects that are created through abuse often create physical side effects as well. These psychological effects, such as anxiety and depression, could cause reoccurring headaches, loss of appetite, insomnia, and many other physical effects due to growing up with a heightened stress response. Even after the abuse ends, adult survivors of childhood abuse are at a higher risk for many long-term problems including “…chronic pain and fibromyalgia, gynecological problems, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, arthritis, headaches, cardiovascular disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome”. Physical abuse usually causes more noticeable side effects than mental or emotional abuse, and they can also sometimes cause life-long problems. The longer the abuse occurs, the worse the repercussions will be. Long-term abuse can result in physical disabilities, brain damage, and even death. Fear of their assaulter alone can affect if they decide to report a sexual assault omitted towards them. According to Adegoke O. Adefolalu, "The extent of this crime [sexual assaults] is grossly underestimated partly due to non-disclosure, which in turn is often attributed to the fear of not being protected adequately after reporting the incidents of sexual violence as the victims fear possible reprisal from their attackers." She mentions how the victims choose to keep quiet about the incident, since they fear their attacker will harm them for reporting the incident. Adefolalu mentions, "Victims who feared reprisal attacks from perpetrator were five times more likely to delay presentation than those who were not." My hypothesis is fear of their assaulter prevents an individual from reporting a sexual assault committed towards them. My null hypothesis is fear does not affect if an individual reports a sexual assault. My independent variable is fear of their assaulter and my dependent variable is unreported sexual assaults. According to U.S. Department of Justice, "when crimes are not reported to the police, victims may not be able to obtain necessary services to cope with the victimization, and offenders may go unpunished." As the weeks have flown by, I have had the opportunity to do every rotation in the psychiatric hospital. After visiting the adolescent unit, I made my way over to the military unit. The military unit was much different than other units I had been to because the patients were higher functioning. Most of the patients in this unit were there because of suicidal ideations. While I was there, I was able to participate in group therapy and I really enjoyed it. We started off with a mindfulness activity in the backyard to release our anxiety. I think that just being outside had a positive vibe for the patients as they were finally allowed to get some fresh air. From there, the patients and I made our way back into the day room where we did an activity
Child abuse, while having many different forms and levels of severity, can be basically defined as the maltreatment of a child by a parent or other adult. When one thinks of child abuse, usually the first thing that comes to mind is physical harm, but the issue is actually much more complex. The abuse of a child can also be manifested in verbal and emotional forms, as well as in sexual molestation. All forms of child abuse generally result in similar emotional disorders and behavioral issues, but the major consequences of sexual abuse, such as mental or emotional scarring, promiscuity, and the tendency of former victims to become sexual abusers, cause it to be the most severely damaging form of child abuse.

Although some studies show that rape is on the decline, other studies report that the phenomena actually occuring is that less rape victims are reporting the crime. This essay will discuss the topic of sexual assault. In the Law Society and Justice program at Dawson, students are taught to think critically about society. In terms of justice and law, they can impact people’s decisions, their choices, and their access to justice. The majority of individuals are unaware that a form of sexual assault takes place approximately every six minutes in the United States (Brison 6). Therefore, almost 293,066 accounts of sexual assault occur each year (Rape Abuse and Incest National Network 1). In this essay, the causes of sexual assault will be presented, the effects of rape on the survivor and society, an ethical theory, and its relationship to Law, Society and Justice.
What is it that makes people want to rape? What does the rapist get out of it? Do they like to see the person in pain, the fear in the victim’s eyes, the screams, to see the victim cry and beg? No-one will ever know the answers to these questions. Rape is a serious crime that needs to be spoken about more. A lot of victims do not report or speak about the incident. Society sees rape and sexual abuse as a taboo subject and it makes people very uncomfortable when mentioned or talked about, especially women who have dealt with this crime.
1 in 5 women will experience sexual assault as an adult (cite). To me, that statistic is mindboggling. I’m not sure people are really aware of the fact that in our society women are raped every single day or maybe they are aware but it doesn’t truly affect their lives until it happens to them or someone they know. Rape is a serious crime. I’m not sure there is a worse crime than rape. Rape is when one person violates the personal space of another. More times than not the attacker is male and the victim is female. With rape not only are you at risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases but also your piece of mind is taken away. Women can experience symptoms of PTSD after being raped. Rape is crime where the act in itself is awful, but also dealing with it after is very painful as well. If our society were more knowledgeable about rape maybe it wouldn’t happen as much. Knowing the difference between the different characteristics of a serial rapist versus a single victim rapist could potentially help women or men identify their attacker, if they know what to look for. This may be more of a struggle for if the attacker is a stranger or a one-time offender, but if women are able to give details about their attack, this could help the criminal justice system find these criminals after the fact. In this paper, I will explain and critique three different studies that were conducted comparing and contrasting serial rapists and single-victim rapists.
