Recommended: Are romeo and juliet in love or lust
Romeo and Juliet is a classic love story written by William Shakespeare. The so called love story seems to focus on lust and may not necessarily be the best example of what true love really is. The two main characters Romeo, and Juliet are said to be “star crossed lovers.” Coming from families that hate one another, they have to go to extreme measures to be together. Looking at the story from the outside, it’s hard to understand how one can come to love so quickly. This raises the question of whether Romeo and Juliet are actually in love or do they just lust for one another? When one loves, they develop a deep emotional attachment to the other person and this is something that cannot be accomplished overnight. Many characteristics such as …show more content…
She is so young and does not know what love really is. Shakespeare informs the reader about the forced marriage and of Rosaline prior to the dinner because he wants to suggest that they are in a depressed state of mind while in attendance. The reader can visualize both sides of the story and see that Romeo and Juliet are searching for an escape from the circumstances they are currently in. Since they are both upset and have an emptiness inside, it is much easier to find an excuse to be attracted to another person. The way this happened is not the way a healthy relationship should be …show more content…
A good relationship requires a lot of time and effort to accomplish. The way they hurried through everything shows that they did not actually have time to fall in love with each other. They certainly showed their lust through the serious decisions made at the spur of the moment. Romeo said, “We met, we woo’d, and made exchange of vow.” This statement truly explains how fast everything happened. Love is patient while lust is always in a hurry. How many people have gotten married within a week of knowing the other? He could have asked to marry her because he didn’t want to wait so long before they were married to have sex. This reflects the idea that Romeo was driven by hormones and focused on the sexual aspect instead of really loving
Love in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet "Romeo and Juliet" is a love tragedy based on different kinds of loves. Romeo and Juliet become married in a forbidden relationship over the high tension brawl between their rival families which Shakespeare clearly shows in the play. Despite the family brawls, the pair decides to let their "perfect" love defeat all. Peoples ideas have changed in the space of 400 years, for example back then some loves featured in this play would produce different reactions to the audience, than today. Shakespeare opens the play with the chorus who speaks a sonnet, where love imagery is found; "Two Star-crossed lovers" =
Love in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare examines the concepts of love in the tragic play
“Romeo and Juliet”, a play composed by William Shakespeare, is about a boy and a girl who are fall in love with each other at first sight, but soon find out that they have fallen in love with the child of their parents enemy. Seeing fate is not on their side due to the ongoing feud between their parents, they are willing to do anything to be together, which unfortunately leads to both of their demise. Many people question if the love between Romeo and Juliet was true. The love between the two was not true because they fell in love with each other’s appearances, they didn’t know each other long enough to actually figure out each other, and they were hardly thinking straight during the relationship.
Love is the biggest thing that can happen in human life. It can make your life incredible or forgettable. In the case of Romeo and Juliet, it was both. They had something between them that would never be destroyed. Their determination to stay together through the tough times was incredible. Even when they knew that their relationship would never be normal, they never gave up. It was a case of love at first sight when their eyes locked on each other. The story of Romeo and Juliet is more to do with love than hate.
One reason some people think that Romeo and Juliet is a true love story is because the whole play is a feet of love about two teen agers how fall in love, go to the grave together and bring two warring family’s closer together due to their love. According to raven moss “love has no face” (para1). What moss is saying is that it does not matter your age race or beauty if its love then it is true .Also Romeo and Juliet were defiantly in love because they were willing to lay down their own life for one another and the fact that they risked their parents finding out and shutting them out of the family or worse never being able to see each other ever again (even though they were already married). According to raven moss teen agers know what love is because they are more open mined than adults so there for more willing to accept love.
Love is often perceived as something perfect and flawless in today’s society. However, Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare, portrays love as a form of passionate and violent force that comes with both rewards and consequences. The tragedy focuses on two young lovers called Romeo and Juliet, whose families are intertwined in an ancient feud that disrupts the peace in Verona, Italy. For love, the two teenagers are driven to overcome obstacles they will never imagine doing, and as a result, they along other family members are forced to pay the price of their lives. Through the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare exhibits the reality of young love through the portrayal of the Queen Mab Speech, the impulsive actions taken by both lovers, and the results caused by the powerful nature of their love.
Despite what many people think, Romeo and Juliet is not a love story; rather a story of desperation and obsession. People have been reading Shakespeare for hundreds of years and several people have mistaken it for a love story, due to the fact that Romeo loves Juliet so much he is willing to kill himself when he finds her supposedly dead; she does the same when she wakes up to find him dead. But in fact, Romeo is more taken aback by her beauty than he is in love with her. Juliet is intrigued by the fact someone could love her because her parents are very unsupportive of her. When the two find each other, they immediately become obsessed, mistaking this for love at first sight.
Romeo and Juliet’s true love is being mistaken for infatuation because they are in lust and are not emotionally stable enough to be in true love.
Love is ironic. It can take you anywhere in the world unexpectedly, and turn you into a person that you never were. However, love is also two-faced, having both a negative and positive view. It is what drives you to the point where you do not know who you are anymore. In Shakespeare's story, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare perceives love with the personalities and actions of the characters, Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet are characterized as immature and irrational due to their "love." In addition, both characters fail to realize the reality of life and go towards the path of adolescence. Even though Romeo and Juliet are doomed at the end of the journey of "love," their demise was caused by their rash and silly decisions because their belief of everlasting love blinds them from reality and shapes their lives into an unstoppable time bomb.
the play is not solely about love but also a lot of hatred is involved
Romeo and Juliet is set during the Elizabethan period when women had to acquiesce to men. This was known as a patriatical society. It was the time when fathers decided whom their daughters should marry. In the Elizabethan period events such as marriage were more traditional and were taken very seriously as well as the fact that men were more powerful than women. The Elizabethan period was a period of internal peace between the English Reformation and the battles between Protestants and Catholics as well the battles between the Parliament and the Monarchy that repulsed the seventeenth century which relates to the Period that Shakespeare wrote the play because it creates this contrast that people were fighting over reputation for example, Capulet wanting to give his daughter Juliet to a rich and respectable man like Paris rather than someone like Romeo who does not have a reputation in the society. However, In the Elizabethan society men were the ''head of the household'' so the women of the Elizabethan society had no say in anything or anyone as well as not being able to know what the men had been up to because the men were seen as the dominant sex but on the other hand, in the twenty first century the women are mostly controlling the men such as a wife of a footballer. Men that were married were able to masquerade (sleep with another women or cheat) on their own wife's and even if the wife of the husband found out about the situation, she could not have done anything about it. She would either accept the situation or leave the husband but rarely women of the Elizabethan period did that because most of the men in the Elizabethan society were rich. As soon as the play starts, Shakespeare wants the audience to know that there is goin...
Before meeting Juliet, Romeo thought he was deeply in love with Rosaline. Romeo says, “When the devout religion of mine eye, Maintains such falsehood, then turn tears to fire; And these who, often drowned, could never die, Transparent heretics, be burnt for liars. One fairer than my love? The all-seeing sun Ne 'er saw her match since first the world begun.”(Act 1, Scene 2) Here, Romeo rambles on about how there never was a girl so perfect as Rosaline. However, no more than two acts later into the play, Romeo is singing praises into the ears of Juliet, attempting to bed her the night they met. Ann Lander’s poem, “Love or Infatuation?” states, “Love is not based on sex. It is the maturation of friendship that makes sex so much sweeter. You must be friends before you can be lovers.” Romeo and Juliet knew nothing of each other before that fateful night, and in fact were enemies because of their family 's schism. Their relationship is solely driven off off sex, as Romeo stated, “Wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied?” (Act 2, Scene 2) To be able to have intercourse, Romeo and Juliet rushed to be wed under the secrecy of Friar Lawrence. “The Differences” says, “Infatuation says, "We must get married right away. I can 't risk losing him." Love says, "Be patient. Don 't panic. Plan your future with confidence." Romeo and Juliet did not plan their relationship at all, instead they rushed through it, throwing caution into the wind. If given time and different circumstances between their families, Romeo and Juliet would have had to keep their relationship secret. Alas, they were unable to do so, therefore Romeo and Juliet are not in love, but instead have an intense sexual desire between
In Romeo and Juliet there is a recurring theme of haste, which leads to a plethora of problems. Juliet was undecided on whether she would marry Romeo but then Juliet reviewed her options and chose to marry Romeo.. “(Juliet)’If your intentions as a lover are truly honorable and/you want to marry me, send me word tomorrow.’” (Shakespeare 2.2.144-145) Love can change someone's perspective in a matter of minutes. That perspective all depends on the events prior to the sudden change. In Romeo's haste he kills himself over Juliet because he thinks he doesn’t have anymore options now that his true love is dead.“‘Here’s to my love!’ ROMEO drinks the poison.” Being in love can cause people to think irrationally and therefore ruin what they once had. Love isn’t always brought up to be a fairy tale because most of the time it will end up with someone getting hurt emotionally or
Even before Juliet is introduced, Romeo considers himself to be in love with Rosaline. Although he says that it is true love, stating “..Doth add more grief to too much of mine own. Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs; Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes..” (Shakespeare, I.1.23), it is clear that his obsession with Rosaline is purely surface-level-- later on in this same scene, it is revealed that Rosaline is taking a vow of chastity, and after that, it could be inferred that Romeo does not know Rosaline well at all. He is simply interested in the concept of her, rather than being in true love with her. After he pursues Rosaline, and quickly gets over her at the masquerade party, Romeo moves on to Juliet, the two immediately “fall in love”, even though they are meeting for the first time. Romeo experiences the same thrill, speaking of Juliet in poems and flowery adjectives, for example, saying that “..It is the East, and Juliet is the sun.” (II.2.69) There are many other incidents where he speaks similarly about the two women, even though they are different. His similar fixation with the two different girls tells us something about Romeo: he is not in love with them specifically-- moreso, the idea of being in love and its caveats, a strong theme that Shakespeare
Due to an ancient grudge, the tale of the downfall of Romeo and Juliet showcases themes of love persisting through all, including death. The two portray an equal lust for each other’s love, yet approach the situation differently. This reflects the contrast between their immature or realistic actions. In the balcony scene in Act II scene ii, Romeo is shown to be impulsive and impractical, whereas Juliet is more reasonable and mature. This is revealed in their attitudes toward love, their current situation, and the language they use.
