In the story, The Odyssey, by Homer, there are many lessons that may be learned. The story tells of Odysseus’ ten-year journey home. In every struggle that Odysseus faces, there is a new lesson to be learned. However, finding these lessons can often be a struggle. The lesson being taught is not always easy to find. Although sometimes difficult, these lessons can help us with everyday life. Ancient Greece used The Odyssey to teach life lessons to children and adults. In modern day, The Odyssey still has many lessons and can still relate to everyday situations. In the short story of “The Lotus Eaters” from The Odyssey, several lessons can be learned. In this story, Odysseus and his men land on a new island. Once they reach the island, Odysseus’ men eat of the lotus flower and decide that they do not want to go back home, but want to stay on the island forever. Odysseus decides to tie the men up, place them on the boat, and sail back home, leaving the lotus flower behind (Homer 864). In this story, a lesson that can be learned is to not let things distract you from what is truly important in life. In life, people get distracted by things such as lust and drugs. The problem is, whenever anyone hears the voice of a Siren, they jump into the ocean, drowning themselves. Odysseus forms a plan to defeat the voice of the Sirens, and succeeds (Homer 882). In this story, a lesson that can be learned is to stand strong and be yourself. Whenever people are spreading rumors or tempting people into doing things they know they shouldn’t, it is important to remember who you are and to stay focused.
