As I read through your response to prompt #1, I couldn’t help but agree. The quote that you mentioned bugged me as well, and I kept rereading that whole section of the essay because it didn’t seem to make sense. It seemed to me, as the reader, that Harrop was trying to make excuses to support her point rather than acknowledge that lives were in danger due to binge drinking. One of the significant problems with statistics is that they seem like they are just numbers, and as a result, most people cannot see that there are actual lives at stake because of the problem. She does this because she was misunderstood when it came to understanding her “drinking problem.” She talks about the statistics with a conversations tone about how excessive drinking cause the brain to only make dopamine when alcohol is present in your body. Your brain makes the metal connection that in order to be happy and feel good, one must drink. Alcoholism comes upon one quickly. When you find yourself drinking to feel pleasure you have crossed the line of a social drinker into an alcoholic (113- 118). She uses the cucumber-to-pickle analogy to explain this by saying, “you can try to stop a cucumber from turing into a pickle but there’s no way you can turn a pickle back into a cucumber”
I fully agree that binge drinking is a problem and that it not only endangers the students who drink but others around them. Binge drinking is prevalent in America because of the social constraints our country puts on alcohol consumption along with the constant messages from the media that binge drinking is a social norm.

The author discusses this topic in a way that seems to be to scare anybody she is trying to convince. A mother reading this could worry about her daughter, or a young man in college who drinks often could take his drinking habits far more seriously after reading something like that. Also, ending the article on an optimistic note, she allows the reader to have some hope. Do we really know how much damage alcohol can do to a person? Alcohol becomes an addiction. Alcohol has its benefits but it also has its downsides. It’s known that alcohol has it’s benefits but if you drink “moderately”. Alcohol can destroy your life and ruin your family. People tend to abuse alcohol, people make bad choices when it comes to alcohol. Alcohol makes you act a certain way when you're intoxicated. Alcohol can cause liver damage and many other health problems. The background of this essay is that I can relate to alcohol usage. Sipping beer at a controlled party was the norm, while today students feel the need to pregame before going to a party since being caught with alcohol at a party can get you into serious trouble and end in a possible arrest. American youth should act and ask their government for their rights if they want this to change – actions are better than words. I believe that the government wants to be happier by making their own nation happy and as an advantage; more companies will reap huge profit due to increased sales, and sure the government will earn more revenues through tax. Moreover, this will go a long way in reducing accidents and incidents due to binge drinking by teenagers.

Binge drinking has many horrible effects, but the problem starts with the causes for it. If the causes could be controlled then the issue would not get out of hand. Teenagers under the age of twenty-one need to know the difference between drinking just to get drunk and drinking to be social. There are countless questions to ask yourself; by reading this you should possibly consider pushing your thoughts in a different standpoint.
