PER REPORTER: Nancy stated that she is concerned about Janijh who is an Autistic student at Lake Middle School. She stated that three months ago Janijh told her that while her mother was pregnant with one of her siblings her father was mean to her mother and pushed her off the porch. Nancy stated that she asked Janijh if she wanted her to report the incident, and Janijh told her no can you just call and check on her. Nancy stated that she then called Janijh’s mother to check on her to make sure that everything was ok. She stated that when she spoke with the mother she told her that her and her father had a disagreement, but she told Nancy that everything was going to be ok. Nancy stated that when Janijh’s mother came to the school to pick her up she did not see any bruises or scars on her. …show more content…

Nancy stated that she was also told by another teacher (Ms.Burn’s) that Janijh came to school and told her that her father hit her mother and possibly broke her nose. Nancy stated that to her understanding Janijh’s father hits her mother pretty often around the children. Nancy stated that Janijh told her that when her father hits her mother she takes her siblings and they hide in the closet. The child also told Nancy that sometimes she has to go out and help her mother. Nancy said that Janijh told her that she once had to get her mother a wet rag for her eye and a cloth for her bleeding lip. Nancy stated that this is Janijh’s first year at Lake Middle School so she contacted her previous school to find out if they had problems with the abuse. Nancy stated that when she spoke with Ms. Seals from Janijh’s previous school she confirmed that everything Janijh was telling her was accurate. As one reads the story their minds goes to assumptions based on past experiences and those can cloud their mind. The tone and the speed how the mother tells her daughter all of this information is based on a reader’s assumptions and/or interpretation of the story, not facts. To refute the other argument that the mother does not specifically address her daughter’s outburst is that in the story she does address the outburst, just not in the ways that would seem conventional. After all, this is a story set years ago in a time that modern day parenting is quite different from in the 60’s. The mother addresses the last outburst of the daughter by asking her daughter after all this time she took to teach her daughter how to be a respectable young woman she won’t even take any of the teachings and become just another ‘slut’ in the eyes of the community.
