Samip Neupane English 1158 Kim Martin LC III- Visual Argument 12/08/2014 Media Portraying the Victim as a Perpetrator On 27th July, during the 1996 summer Olympics, Atlanta Police received a 911-call saying that there was a bomb planted at Centennial Olympic Park. The police responded to the call by sending a unit to the area. Meanwhile, inside in the stadium, one of the guards stationed at the sound and light tower, Richard Jewell found an unattended bag. Suspecting the bag might contain explosives, Jewell notified a Georgia Bureau of Investigation officer about it. The officer called Bomb squad, and he, with Jewell started evacuating the area, but before the bomb squad could do anything, the bomb detonated killing two and injuring 111 …show more content…
They didn’t hesitate to step over the line to find out more about the situation and own the news. Kathy Scruggs, one of the Journal Constitution reporter somehow found out that FBI suspected Jewell and that he fit the pattern of the bomber. When Scruggs also learnt about the situation through her source at Atlanta Police Department, she along with her colleague Ron Martz wrote a news report titled, “FBI suspects ‘hero’ guard may have planted bomb”. (Ostrow) Although, the reporters received the story from anonymous sources, they did not mention it in the news report so that the public would find the news more credible. In matter of hours other news report that depicted Jewell as a suspect emerged while in fact FBI was not so sure about that, as they knew that Jewell could not have made the 911 call as he was far from a place the phone call was made. CNN published similar news without any official information from FBI or Atlanta Police. A reporter in NBC Brokaw, stated in a news broadcast that FBI were making a case to arrest and prosecute Jewell and they were just looking for final evidences to hold him convict while FBI was still doing a background search on him. Other NBC reporters mentioned that Jewell was on the top of the suspect list and that he could be arrested the next morning. Brokaw also said that he had "very high-ranking federal law enforcement officials in Washington and in Atlanta" confirm the story …show more content…
News reporters should use their discretion and publish accurate and true information. In this era of technology, news and information travel across the globe in a matter of minutes, so the role of media is even more important. As readers we should be more careful about what we read and what to believe, which can be done by cross-referencing the information with other credible sources. Media, on its part should be more impartial and critical of the news they publish so that there aren’t any Richard Jewells in the

After more than 28 years, amidst the controversy surrounding Mumia's guilty conviction and later receipt of the death penalty, there are those who are not convinced. Many Mumia supporter and some advocating for abolition of the death penalty believe corruption in the Philadelphia Police Department, coupled with a flawed judicial system, backed by racist judges, have lead to a conspiracy to commit murder on the part of the State. Abu-Jamal Mumia, a well known journalist and community activist from Philadelphia has been on death row since 1983 for the shooting death of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981. Because of his political views and his former involvement with the Black Panther Party, Mumia has been viewed as a hero by some and a "menace to society" by others. At this point, guilty or not guilty is merely a rhetorical question that may never be answered. Many believe that Mumia is being set up as the “fall guy” for a "hit" ordered on Officer Faulkner by the "Mafia". On the other hand, there are those who believe that him is an insensitive, cold blooded "cop kil...

Many of the questions, issues surrounding the investigation, the actions of the investigating officials, and more; will never be answered. The some of the strange occurrences are the discrepancy in the White House statement and the testimony of witnesses at the scene and the site of the investigation. Additionally, the degree of carelessness demonstrated by the federal officers and the Park authorities in-charge of the investigation is overwhelming. Since when a White House official found dead under mysterious circumstances, his body found on Federal land, successful man and attorney takes his life, and the investigation riddled by rookie mistakes. The best guess that creates an aura of deniability is a series of unfortunate events, or maybe Vince Foster did not commit suicide.
On September 17, 2016, tragedy struck Manhattan, New York. Explosions erupted at about 8:30pm as people, extremely terrified, started running as fast as they can away from the explosion. About 31 people were injured as of today. The question everybody has in mind. Who did this and why? I believe it was Ahmad Khan Rahami because he was at the incident looking very suspicious carrying a ‘mysterious’ bag, and he was arrested many times for many incidents. In the article “Chelsea Bombing:What We Know and Don’t Know” posted on New York Times by Karen Workman, the author explained about what happened and details about the situation. In the article “NY, NJ bombings: Suspect charged with attempted murder of officers” posted on CNN by Evan Perez, Shimon
The media was really involved with this case, and many Americans had different opinions on what should happen to all the defendants, and of course the final decisions was that they were found guilty of conspiracy. Although, nothing much really happened after they got arrested it important to understand a couple of things.

When the FBI looked at it they thought that it was just right that she was getting convicted because they thought that she did it, too. They didn’t like Patty Hearst case because her father Randolph Apperson Hearst was a newspaper heir worldwide, so they kidnapped his daughter to get back at him that he was famous. The SLA wanted to be famous, so they kidnapped his daughter to be famous around the world. When they knew nobody would help her, they just convicted her because they thought she was the one that robbed the
In “Reporting the News” by George C. Edwards III, Martin P. Wattenberg, and Robert L. Lineberry, the main idea is how the media determines what to air, where to get said stories that will air, how the media presents the news, and the medias effect on the general public. “Reporting The News” is a very strong and detailed article. The authors’ purpose is to inform the readers of what goes on in the news media. This can be inferred by the authors’ tone. The authors’ overall tone is critical of the topics that are covered. The tone can be determined by the authors’ strong use of transitions, specific examples, and phrases or words that indicate analysis. To summarize, first, the authors’ indicate that the media chooses its stories that will air

In this story, Pope Francis is alleged to have commented on FBI’s investigation on Hillary Clinton (WTOE 5 News, n.d). The article claims that the pope said that FBI’s failure to prosecute Hillary despite acknowledging that there was a crime had been committed shows that the security agency is corrupted by powerful political forces. This story would easily be classified as fake because the WTOE website on which it was issued owns up as being a fake news agency. This is deduced from its “about” page where it states that it is a fantasy and satire site, thus its news lacks credibility. While the New York Times has sated all its location address and author details, WTOE gives scanty information about itself, has no author or date when the article was published. On the other hand, the article on The New York Times has an author and date of
