The 90’s were a time in America where wars were fought and legends were made. It was about people believing in themselves and knowing what it takes to accomplish a dream of theirs. Although this was a hard time for America like the world trade bombing and the gulf war some people achieved something that they weren’t supposed to and went through so much to get to where they are today. Some examples of these outgoing people are Michael Jordan, Herschel Walker, and Barry Sanders. This is an essay about all of that the 90’s. One of the most influential people during the 90’s without question is Michael Jordan. He was known as the best basketball player of all time but his first love as a kid was baseball. As a sophomore in high school he was cut from the team so he practiced every day and during his junior and senior years he averaged 25 points a game and made the McDonalds all American game. He then got a scholarship to play basketball at North Carolina and that’s were his career hit off as he hit the game winning shot for North Carolina to win the national championship as a freshman. He then went into the NBA draft to be drafted 3rd overall and averaged almost 30 points a game. For the rest of his career he would win five regular season MVP awards, six NBA championships, six NBA final MVP’S, three All Star MVP’S and defensive player of the year. When his career was all said and done he went on to be the greatest basketball player that has ever lived(“Biography”). But maybe a bigger story than Michael Jordan might be a guy by the name of Herschel Walker. He was born in Georgia and grew up just outside in the town of Wrightsville. Although he was a college and pro football star he had no interest in sports until he was 12. When one of the men was arrested he said that the next time they attack they would bring both of them down which came on 9/11 which shook the whole world in an event nobody will ever forget (“Woog”). So in conclusion that is my report over the events that happened in the 90’s. The whole idea of the 90’s was economic stress and wars and making sure that they did something to stop people that were in charge of the threats. But it was also about people living there dream and when somebody said that they couldn’t do something they just worked even harder to prove them wrong and prove themselves that they could do it. After all one of Michael Jordan’s most famous quotes “I can accept failure everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying”.
Even some basketball fans don’t even know who they are. For people that love watching basketball, and that are fans of college basketball and the NBA. They need to know who really paved the way for people like Allen Iverson and Shaquille O'neal. These were such big stars that we know today because they were so voicetress and charismatic to not just the basketball world but the pop culture world as well. People that play basketball today owe a token of gratitude to the Fab Five for paving the way for things we take for granted like wearing stylish basketball clothes, listening to music before a game, and for trash talking. This famous quote was said by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one of the most famous black basketball players, symbolized what many black athletes were pursuing when they first got into sports. In today’s world not only are black athletes a part of our sports venue, they are dominating the landscape of some sports such as the NBA which consists of a whopping 80% black athletes. Black athletes continue to revitalize sports in America as some athletes became the face of their sports such as Muhammad Ali in boxing, Jackie Robinson in baseball and Michael Jordan in basketball. Sports came as a form of entertainment for many Americans, but for black athletes it came as a pathway to express who they were and what they believed in. The more they became involved in sports, the more media they were able to attract which enabled them to talk about topics other than sports such as racism, their religions and equality through the civil rights movement. These views and statements made in their interviews and press conferences were the ones that became publicized and more popular amongst the typical white men in America and it played a huge role in changing the way blacks were viewed in American society.

Through the Civil Rights movement, America's involvement in the Cold War, and a period of transition in America, Michael Jordan entered the NBA at a time of cultivation. All the hard work that Jordan did through his life, and all the hard work society did to progress as a whole colloborated in the 1980's, and allowed Michael Jordan to become a revolutionary. Michael Jordan is an iconic symbol of not just basketball, but American change and progress and it's influence throughout the world.
When we were asked to start thinking of our topics for our research papers Michael Jordan had just announced his retirement from basketball. There were all of these specials on the sports channels and the news so I had to find out what all the commotion was about. This is why I chose Michael Jordan to be the topic of my research paper. I hoped to find out how he became to be considered the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. I learned about a lot about Michael during the first week of my search since he was getting so much attention from the media at the time.

To be born in the 1980’s would have a been a privilege, who wouldn’t want to be known as “The decade that defined…. “US!” The 1980s was a decade that began on January 1, 1980, and ended on December 31, 1989. This decade was a great social and economic time period for people living in the 80’s. The world was becoming more developed as well as everyone in it. This decade became the “Look at me” generation of status seekers. The 80’s made a new breed of billionaires and money makers. “The decade began with double-digit inflation, Reagan declared a war on drugs, Kermit didn't find it easy to be green, hospital costs rose, we lost many, many of our finest talents to AIDS which before the decade ended spread to black and Hispanic women, and unemployment rose,” according to Peggy Whitely of Lone Star College. Although this time seemed like all fun and games, there were many problems. People say we lost the meaning of “We” and it suddenly became “I.” Citizens were realizing that you couldn’t depend on others around you; they were coming up with new ideas, and inventions to allow things to be more efficient. Although the 1980’s suffered a huge change for the American people, the fads and fashion part of the people strived, as well as the inventions. These two things will be some of the most historical, yet fascinating parts of the 80’s generation in American History.
Herschel Walker was born in Augusta, Georgia and grew up outside of Wrightsville, Georgia for the first eleven years of Herschel life he did not show any interest in sports; he preferred reading books and writing poetry. At age ten he went to the Doctor for being overweight at age 12 he began a crash exercise program. Over the next years he did 100,000 pushups, 100,000 sit ups and sprinted thousands
Michael Jordan, in his prime, was thought of as one of the greatest basketball champions of all time. A shooting guard, standing at six-six, Jordan was able to out play anyone in his position. He started his career at the University of North Carolina, where he helped his team win a national championship. He then was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984-85 season. While playing for the Bulls, Jordan received many awards such as, MVP, five championships, Olympic gold medals, slam dunk contests, and many more defensive and offensive awards. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, but so Cassius Clay, Jackie Robinson, and Bill Russell. Long before King’s famous “I Had a Dream” speech or Rosa Parks famous stand came something much simpler: sports. Sports have always had the ability to open people’s eyes in a way that is more impactful than words or actions. The way that athletics can shape a persons mind, or open their eyes to something beyond what they already believe, is incredible. They can get everyone to root for a common purpose, a common goal. And for some, that was freedom. The integration of professional and collegiate athletics not only changed sports history, but helped shape American history.
In 1981, Michael Jordan stepped foot on North Carolina’s campus as a top recruited freshman and was soon to be one of only four freshmen to ever earn a starting spot under Coach Dean Smith. The University of North Carolina was where Michael Jordan’s legacy started, and as of now, it will not end anytime soon. In his playing days, Michael was a second overall draft pick, Nike client, six-time NBA champ, six-time NBA finals MVP, five-time NBA MVP, and a fourteen-time all-star. After his playing days were over, Jordan’s impact on the game and on the fans never died. He is a role model to many people spanning over all generations from old to young. Because of his American values of motivation, dedication, and a hard work ethic, he has helped defined the way society views the sports industry.
Are you a person that likes excitement, and watching people do amazing things with a round ball that you can hold in your hands? Or, are you someone that likes to watch all the fortunes and misfortunes that can happen in a round of golf? Have you heard the great names of Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan? These men are said to be people who changed the sport they played in for all time. Both of these men are great athletes and they were very dedicated players. I am comparing these two because it’s amazing the different things you can accomplish in two completely different sports. Also, these players broke records and gained achievements that had either never been done, or very few people had accomplished in the sport.
