Everything That Rises Must Converge
Flannery O'Connor once said “All my stories are about the action of grace on a character who is not very willing to support it, but most people think of these stories as hard, hopeless and brutal.” But to many readers this may sound very ironic. This perspective may be easily picked up by readers seeing how she is very unsympathic towards the characters; she made all her characters who eventually are led to their own down fall very proud people; but yet places them in a very physiologically vulnerable position and claiming that they are ungrateful for the grace around them. Her stories also surrounds strongly around a shredding of falsehood in a form of accepting, and embracing defeat, or humility; but she also gives no chance of a redemption for the by ending most of the stories with the characters cornered into a state of complete breakdown. The stories also contain a many heavily enforced Christian ideology and morals, and with the brutality she enforces these moralise it no surprise that reader may see her as a twisted and aggressive bible basher.
Her unsympathic attitude towards the characters in her stories could be seen in the way she structured that characters, situation, and the environment they’re in. She often structures the character to be very proud, and the pride of these people would not allow them to admit defeat or loss to the situation; but would instead continue to infest itself in the characters’ minds making putting them in to a false reality that they are somehow more superior then people surrounding them, by certain attributes such as their social class, race, knowledge, or heritage. Example of character like these would be Julian and his mother in her story “Everything Rises Must Converge” Julian mother was finds pride in what her grandfather was; and she finds herself to be fragile in the present state of the world for what it had changed into; but was unwilling to show her weakness to people around her. As for Julian his problem was that he was a failure to a certain extent, considering that he was a grown man still living off his mother; but yet he feels the need to not be overpower by his mother, but was unable to do so in any other but to do so by judging her judgement and, behaviour towards the African Americans.

The religious imagery in Flannery O'Connor's The Life You Save May Be Your Own gives the story a cynical undertone along with a healthy dose of irony. O'Connor uses allusions to Jesus and Christianity to examine the hypocrisies of the religion and its adherents. Her character Tom T. Shiftlet is portrayed paradoxically as both the embodiment of Christ and an immoral, utterly selfish miscreant.
For example, she had to go through father dying, She always has her own way of doing things and will never do anything that she does not want to do. She will say whatever comes to mind, even if it is offensive or rude. For example, she would bicker back and forth with John Reid telling him horrible things and not feel any sympathy for his feelings:“I hate you Mr.Reid. And I’ll find a way of getting back at you!”.
In O’Connor’s short stories she is writing from a catholic perspective, which was not very noticeable at first, but once it is realized that her stories are written with a religious undertone about grace it is hard to forget. In her short stories such as “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, “Revelation” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge” the characters are people who believe they are better than some other class and have a “holier than thou” attitude towards many, especially directed towards African-Americans who are seen as second class citizens. Because of their attitude and way of life, O’Connor gives them a chance to rethink their lives or show them grace, through an act that shocks them. O’Connor uses “freaks” to give the characters a chance at receiving grace such as the ugly girl in “Revelation”, which causes Mrs. Turpin to rethink the way she treats people she believes to below her and her judgmental ways. The “Freaks” bring about a distinct change in the way the characters view others by showing them the errors of their ways and that times have changed. This could also be considered an act of grace and a sign from God. The settings for the stories seem to be predominately take place in the south, where religion is a major influence in people’s lives during the time her stories take place. This change in their views of the world can be seen in all three of the short stories “Revelation”, “Everything That Rises Must Converge”, and “A Good Man is Hard to find”.
In her short stories “Revelation” and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” O’Connor is able to convey the oppressive and hypocritical attitudes of a Southern woman in the post civil war era. Through the actions of her characters The Grandmother and Mrs. Turpin O’Connor suggests that the that the people who can’t let go of the past are the members that are a true detriment to society. Religion is a pervasive theme in most of the literary works of the late Georgia writer Flannery O'Connor. Four of her short stories in particular deal with the relationship between Christianity and society in the Southern Bible Belt: "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," "The River," "Good Country People," and "Revelation." Louis D. Rubin, Jr. believes that the mixture of "the primitive fundamentalism of her region, [and] the Roman Catholicism of her faith . . ." makes her religious fiction both well-refined and entertaining (70-71). O'Connor's stories give a grotesque and often stark vision of the clash between traditional Southern Christian values and the ever-changing social scene of the twentieth century. Three of the main religious ingredients that lend to this effect are the presence of divine meanings, revelations of God, and the struggle between the powers of Satan and God.
In Flannery O’Connor’s stories, “Good Country People”, “Everything that Rises Must Converge”, ”A Good Man is Hard to Find”, and “The Life You Save May Be Your Own”, there are many similar characters and situations. Few, if any of the characters are likeable, and most of them are grotesque. Two of the stories have characters that view themselves as superior in one way or another to those around them, and in some cases these characters experience a downfall, illustrating the old proverb, “Pride goeth before a fall” (King James Bible ,Proverbs 16:18). Two of the stories include a character that has some type of disability, three of the stories showcase a very turbulent relationship between a parent and child, and three of the stories contain a character that could easily be described as evil.
All of O’Connor’s writings are done in a Southern scene with a Christian theme, but they end in tragedy. As Di Renzo stated “her procession of unsavory characters “conjures up, in her own words, “an image of Gothic monstrosities”… (2). Flannery O’Connor was highly criticized for her work as a writer, because of her style of writing, and her use of God. It was stated that “…whatever the stories may have meant to her, they often send a quite different message to the reader”… (Bandy). There are many themes within Flannery O’Connor’s short story “Good Country People”. Religion is definitely one of the more prominent themes that the story holds. Like most of O’Connor’s works, it plays a big part in the actions or characteristics of the main characters. This is all on the surface however. The more important and less accentuated theme is the various facades the characters create for themselves. These facades prevent them from facing their true “grotesque” selves. These facades also hide their weaknesses that they have no wish to face ort just can’t understand. People must be comfortable with every aspect of themselves, because certain people, who in this story are represented by Manley Pointer’s character, can easily exploit their weaknesses. He’s “good country people” and “the salt of the earth” as Mrs. Hopewell refers to Manley Pointer who really is a demon that they must face. A demon to remind them of their weaknesses.
One of those traits is jealousy. The narrator shows jealousy when at her piano lesson she thinks “I stared at the umbrella. I wanted to open it, twirl it around by its silver handle; I wanted dangle it from my wrist on the way to school the way the other girls did”. She is jealous of the other girls and their possessions because she cannot have such nice things.Another trait the narrator shows is stubbornness. After the narrator's piano lesson she demonstrates this trait when she refuses to believe that her mother is not coming soon. Every time Ms.Crossman asks her if she wants to come inside because her mother clearly isn't coming, the narrator refuses the offer even though she knows her mother isn't coming. In addition, the narrator refuses to let her sister, Mona, go inside because of the false belief that her mother is coming soon.The final trait that is possibly the most compulsive, is shamefulness. When she was given the umbrella from Ms.Crossman she said something no one should ever say. She said “I wish you were my mother”. Immediately after she said this, her mother drove up. Flannery O’Connor's perception of human nature is imprinted throughout her various works. This view is especially evident in the short stories, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Revelation.” She conveys a timeless message through the scope of two ignorant, southern, upper class women. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” O’Connor presents readers to a family who is going on a road trip with their selfish grandmother. She is a religious woman who does not follow the set standards that she preaches. Similar characteristics are exposed in “Revelation.” As the self centered Mrs. Turpin sits in the waiting room, she contemplates on her own status with God. Nevertheless, she still commits the sin of judging others. In both of O’Connor’s short stories, these controversial protagonists initially put up a facade in order to alienate themselves from their prospective societies. Although the grandmother and Mrs. Turpin both believe in God, O’Connor utilizes theme to expose that they also convince themselves that they can take on His role by placing judgement on people who, at the most fundamental level, are in the same category as them.

Her character is proven as an unreliable narrator as she exaggerates parts of the story and tries to explain that she is in fact not guilty of being a mistress, but a person caught in a crossfire between two others.
Even though her husband treats her with what seem at first as love, it becomes clear she is nothing more to him than a piece of property. Every time he talks to her, he asks her to get better for his sake and the children's, and only after mentions hers interests. He doesn't think that she has any normal human feelings or worries and attributes her behavior to minor nervous depression. He doesn't see her true suffering since he believes "there is no reason to suffer" (574). He could never understand that a woman can be unsatisfied with the role imposed on her by society. Even though the heroine recognizes that her condition is caused by something other than John's theory, she is too scared to voice her opinion.
The main recurring theme in Flannery O’Connor’s stories is the use of violence towards characters in order to give them an eye-opening moment in which they finally realize their true self in relation to the rest of society and openly accept insight into how they should act or think. This theme of violence can clearly be seen in three works by Flannery O’Connor: A Good Man is Hard to Find, Good Country People, and Everything That Rises Must Converge.

In order to fully understand her work one must research O’Connor and her background to be able to recognize her allegories throughout her stories. Her usage of religious symbols can best be studied by looking into her religious Catholic upbringing. Formalist criticism exists in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” through Flannery O’Connor’s use of plot, characterization, setting, and symbolism.
