Evaluating Cooper’s Ice Center’s situation, Claude Cooper is looking to increase his profits. He is doing a few things right. For instance, his hockey program is doing well and is contributing largely to his profits. Along with keeping his hockey program, Cooper should also keep the public skating. While this is not bringing in revenue now, there is a great potential in the program. Over 700 hundred people could attend this event and it would increase revenue in concessions. Their facility is the only ice rink located in the northern city with 450,000 people. This means there is a great market for public skating. Because a variety of ages attend Cooper’s rink, he should tap into both the younger and older crowd. He could dedicate one slot to a different generation, such as a Saturday afternoon, for the children, Sunday afternoon, for families, Friday night for the teens and Saturday nights for the adults. Cooper should come to realize ice skating is an activity for all ages. If Cooper felt it was too timely to set up for these different types of groups, he could divide the rink into fast skating and slow skating sections. The music in the rink should be addressed to all the age groups in the rink. The music should be neutral or have a variety to appeal to all members. Next, promoting on a rock station is a waste of Cooper’s money. While many kids might listen to rock, none of the kids can drive. Therefore, their parents are probably in charge of the station and won’t listen to rock, which in turn means the kids won’t hear the advertisement. Also, these advertisements should not be directed to kids only. Ice skating can be a family event and often time if kids are allowed to go alone anywhere, they have to get the parents approval. This is why advertising to the adults is important too. However, when advertising to the parents, they should portray a safe place to drop off the kids.
