In the world of competitive sports, athletes are willing to do anything to make sure they can perform to the best of their abilities. While it may seem like most athletes know what they are doing and putting into their body, there are always those few who are looking for something extra to help them perform better. Exercise physiologist working in the sports medicine field seems to have a better understanding of sports nutrition. Advocating for supplements raises an ethical issue for exercise physiologist because while they are not illegal, they also don’t have any health benefits. We must keep the principle of non-malificence in mind when advising our athletes or clients if supplements are good for them. There are some who believe that advocating for supplements and the supplement industry causes a conflict of interest (Boone, 2005). However, Birnbaum (2003) stated, “Exercise physiologists should be able to provide accurate information about supplements to clientele interested in them without advocating their use. In doing so, exercise physiologists are providing a useful service and avoiding possible litigation” (p. 17). This way they will still be credited professionals and wont cause any harm to their athletes or clients. The ASEP should include in their code of ethics that exercises physiologist should cause no harm to their clients. By advocating for the use of supplements they are causing some harm to their clients and athletes because the effects of the supplements are unknown. As exercise physiologist we want to improve our athletes health so if taking supplements has no health benefits, why advocate for them. I know that they Olympics have prohibited the athletes to use any supplements, as the effects of the ingredients are unknown. I would suggest that be carried down to collegiate and professional
