In the Ted talk called Social Experiments to Fight Poverty, with the speaker Esther Duflo who talks about how spending money on poverty can either hurt or help contribute to eradicating poverty. Esther Duflo also talks about poverty in a couple different ways through the following reasons; immunization, education, and doing something to stop poverty can really change the world. Firstly, Esther Duflo believes that immunization can help with poverty. It can help because immunization is the cheapest way to save a child's life and can help prevent Malaria, deworm children, and give poor people lentils to live on. Firstly, I had learned that poor people also lack sufficient money amounts to live at a standard normalness in a society. Next, in class I learned through the ted talk that people, especially in rural countries are poor because their lacking education, immunizations and more. Next, in my opinion I believe that to stop or help prevent poverty, a suggestion would be to tax the rich more instead of the middle to lower class people who then could afford the basic needs. I believe this would work, because it would help balance things out in the economy so the rich doesn't get richer and the poor doesn’t get poorer so they can afford extra needs. Finally, in the Ted Talk, it makes me think about why wouldn’t more people help, especially the rich. Could it be because the rich thinks the poor should find a better job that will make money, causing the rich to not give? Or could it be greed is benefiting the rich, therefore causing no need to give to the poor. With these questions that pop up in my head there’s probably no real answer to stop poverty. Poverty is a complex and growing problem in the United States. As of right now there is no solution. There are proposals and acts, such as Obama Care, that were enacted in an attempt to help people in poverty, and there are so many organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity and The Hunger Project, that try to aid people when they start to lack the necessities, like food and shelter. College students are graduating college with a large amount of student loans and no way of paying them off, people are being evicted from their homes, and employees are being laid off. The unemployment rate in the United States in 2015 was five percent, that’s about fifteen million people. It’s becoming difficult for people to find jobs, therefore making it hard for people to get back on their feet and start living a comfortable lifestyle. Poverty in the

Poverty is a potential outcome for everyone. It’s sneaky and many people fall victim to it every year. No one believes that they have the potential to fall into debt, but it can happen through a string of bad luck, time running short, and other possibilities that can’t be controlled. People who are struggling with difficulty believe that there is no way out because no one will help them. However, there are ways for us, as a society, to help those who are short on income receive the help that they need. Many of the impoverished are thought to be slackers, addicts, or self-destructive to their lives. Society can help each other by dismembering the stereotypes given to people who are underneath the “Poverty Line” that they used as wedges between the classes. Labels given to those who’re poor have nothing to do with who they are as humans.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “If America does not use her vast resources of wealth to end poverty and make it possible for all of God’s children to have basic necessities, she too will go to hell.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2015, 43.1 million Americans lived in poverty, a poverty rate of 13.5%. How does America close this gap and show that the poverty rate be lowered? The government should act on poverty prevention programs before poverty alleviation programs because prevention is less expensive and more effective at getting to the root of the issue. Poverty prevention programs keep people from becoming or staying poor, while alleviation programs simply work to make poverty more bearable.
One of the main causes of poverty is a lack of money. There are some families that do have at least one person employed in the household but the money earned is not enough to provide for the family. Tough decisions such as paying rent buying groceries become a daily challenge for struggling households. Those living in households headed by people with no high school degree are the most likely to enter poverty. Limited options in the job market make it hard for those without degrees the ability to find jobs that will pay above minimum wage. Many Americans earn less than the nation’s median income which hinders most Americans from living a life free of hunger. Children who grow up in poverty suffer more persistent, frequent, and severe health problems than do children who grow up under better financial circumstances. Children of poverty are at an extreme disadvantage and cycle ends up repeating itself until the pattern is somehow

The same common question comes to us all at one point,”Why are people poor?” Whether you are liberal, conservative, or have had previous experiences that pull us to believe more strongly in certain things, all of our ideas on poverty fall on the same path. Unfortunately, as reality points out, is that inside the walls of the White House, where it is commonly believed that actual progress is happening, ideas on poverty revolve around stock exchange, whose ideas only benefit those who get elected. Subsequently, these elected officials lead a group or campaign in a worthless round of unethical ideas that instead of helping poverty, increases U.S. debt. It is also commonly misinterpreted that the articles on poverty from the many journalists, newscasters, and other liberalists are quite true when discussing the causes of poverty. But many of these journalists tend to talk about the ‘symptoms’ of poverty rather than it’s root causes. So, how can we solve this issue on political pandering, public misinterpretation, and most of all, the ironic amount of poverty in such an industrial america?
If the rich were to help the poor, it would discourage them from working harder and therefore they would not be working to their full potential. The poor would also become dependent on the rich, which can lead to plutocracy. In a plutocracy, the rich would rule over the poor. However, there is a point when you should help the poor. When they are ready to help themselves and require assistance they should be helped, but only to a certain degree.
Many people do not realize that there are tens of millions of people in America who are living in poverty because they are stuck on the fact that America is one of the richest nations. People who are living in poverty barely have enough money to survive on basic necessities like food, shelter and electricity. They often have a hectic schedule filled with work, school, or other activities that they have to do in order for them to live a somewhat stable life. Unfortunately, there are others who are living in poverty that may be ill or disabled and barely able to survive even if they are receiving money to help with their situation. There are a few programs that help those in poverty with their financial problems, but they only help them to a certain extent. Changes need to be done to help alleviate the poverty rate because these people should not have to deal with all of these hardships or have such a negative perspective of life. Therefore, America can reduce its poverty by raising the minimum wage, making health care more accessible, and by making child care more affordable. These solutions will be a great start to reducing poverty and they will lead America into a brighter future.
The Feminist Analyses Theory states because society tends to put women in more subordinate positions to men, they do not have access to the same jobs and opportunities (Macionis. 2015). Men are more commonly in positions and jobs of power than women, and make more money, therefore leading to the Feminization of Poverty. One of the Biggest Challenges for Women Today: The Feminization of Poverty The division of labour and education along gender lines, racial inequalities and discrimination, and unpaid domestic labour all contribute to the growing feminization of poverty. Feminists are working to decrease the income gap, to benefit the overall health of women and the population at large. The term feminization of poverty describes the disproportionate number of women who are poor, and its link to the division of labour along gender lines (Calixte, Johnson, & Motapanyane, 2010). The Canadian Labour Congress reported that in 2005, women working full time earned 70.5 cents to the dollar that every male in a comparable job earned ( as cited in Calixte, et al., 2010, p. 17). Across the board, women are more likely to suffer from poverty than men are (Harnan, 2006).
Poverty is an issue which the world faces everyday. It is a constant struggle that cannot be ignored anymore. As you can see defeating poverty would take great efforts and contributions from all. We must better educate the youth and have education available for everyone all over the world. We also need to ensure that everyone has a job and that they are properly skilled for the job. People need to realize that poverty affects everyone, not only the poor and uneducated. Our world would be a much better place if everyone pitched in to help defeat a major problem around the world, poverty.
Poverty is prevalent throughout the world around us. We watch television and see famous people begging us to sponsor a child for only ten dollars a month. We think in our own minds that ten dollars is only pocket change, but to those children and their families, that ten dollars is a large portion of their annual income. We see images of starving children in far away countries, and our hearts go out to them. But we really do not know the implications of poverty, why it exists, or even what we can do to help combat this giant problem in our world.
In conclusion, sometimes actions take place that changes a person’s outlook on life and as you can see poverty is one that can have a huge effect on not only one person, but also the people around him/ her.
