The dance topic I chose was a stiletto dance. The stiletto dance originated from the women’s shoe style, which was the stiletto heel. Men and women in the entertainment business are usually seen wearing stiletto heels for performances. Genres such as ballroom dance, jazz dance, and Latin dance. Basic techniques from ballet are still useful whiles dancing in heels, they help you to prepare and keep your balance. In today’s era, men and women have taken over the stiletto genre and made it into a unique style where other choreographers have the ability to use it in their classes as well. We live in a generation where “sex sells” therefore, a lot of heel choreography represents sex appeal and how you can interpret a sexual song into a performance.
Dancing in heels creates a fantasy where you create a personal sexy walk, smooth transitions, tricks, levels and lines with your body. Stiletto dance is a craft because you are constantly using basic elements from different genres such as ballet, modern, jazz etc. All genres have some sort of connection together even though it’s a different style. A lot of individuals take “heel dancing” out of context, some may look at it as exotic dancing or vulgar dancing. It may make some people feel uncomfortable because of all the sexual movement that is being demonstrated by the fluidity of the body. Some may have their personal views on what they believe dance should be, but there shouldn’t be any limitations on what dancers can or cannot do. Beyoncé is known for heels choreography along with background dancers that adopt this same style of dancing to be able to perform with her. All of Beyoncé’s background dancers need to have the ability to dance in heels for hours which challenges anyone’s performance level. As I studied her background dancer’s majority of the shoes they perform in are character shoes. Character shoes are seen in jazz as well because the heel of a character shoe is so low dancers like myself have a better
Some of the most powerful moments in dance are simple movements where dancers are able to pull from a different place every time he or she performs a movement whether it be a smack on the leg or a stomp each movement represents something.
Dancers have the ability to transform into an alter ego whiles being on stage. The beauty of dance is even if you aren’t confident it gives you that confidence. A performance in heels is nothing without facial expressions and confidence. Dancers tell stories by using different facial expressions to connect with the audience. Without none of these key elements, there won’t be anything to look forward to. All dancers should remember that people are paying to come and see an amazing performance, and it is important that dancers give them what they paid
