The particularly odd narrative perspective Morrison uses in Beloved helps to further Morrison’s idea of rememory and the reverberating effects of the past on the present. This particular style suggests a more human story as the flashbacks are incited by moments of the linear story which link to a character’s past. The effect of this is the feeling of connection with the memories because they seems extremely natural compared to the more classically structured narratives of other books. On the judgements of killing the child which later becomes Beloved, Morrison seems as if she presents the pains and suffering of the years following the event and the trials which Beloved puts her through to be punishment for her Sins. First, water is used to symbolize birth and the bringing or return of life. Second, it is used to in reference to the use of water in christian rituals. Trees in Beloved almost constantly remind the characters of stability, safety and peace, for Paul D. he used to find peace resting under trees. The ghost motif of Beloved seeks to physically manifest Morrisons ideas of rememory and the way that things return to affect the present. Scars in the book serve as literal and natural reminded of the past, the ghost motif is intangible like a scar on the mind whilst the scars in the book remind the characters of very real and painful experiences. Lastly, hearts in Beloved come up to represent one part the like that of How the Grinch Stole Christmas but in a disturbing necrophilia kind of way. As Paul D. has sex with Beloved in the shack he says red heart over and over, and while this does seemingly mimic the rhythm of sex it also reminds me oddly of the Grinch’s heart growing two sizes larger, and Paul D.’s heart outgrowing his rusted tobacco
