Privacy and confidentiality are correlated with one another; however, they hold different meanings. Privacy is viewed as an autonomy ethical principle, and confidentiality relates to the fidelity principle. Ones' right to manage their personal information and whom that information may be shared with is privacy, it is an individual's right (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2016, p. 76). Confidentiality is the backbone to privacy because it upholds this right for every person. In other words, once a person chooses to disclose their personal information to another individual, it is that individual's responsibility to keep the information confidential unless consent is given for disclosure, one must protect that person's privacy. My patients' wife had dementia and my patient previously cared for her before he was admitted to the hospital. The wife was temporarily being cared for by their daughter and son in law. An altercation transpired in the patients' room, and ultimately escalated to the point I had to ask the family members to leave. The son in law informed me that he would be leaving the wife in the patients' room for the night. I explained to him that, unfortunately, because of her health conditions she could not stay the night unsupervised because I was incapable of ensuring her safety because she was not a patient. He understood and reluctantly stated they would take her home. The wife refused to leave the room and stated that the son in law put his hands on her, was rough with her, and was a very mean man. This further complicated the issue because what she had stated to me implied she was being abused. I discussed the issue with our nurse supervisor who state the wife has dementia and the validity of her statement could not be verified. While I understood this, and agreed that it could not be verified at the time, I had an obligation to ensure the safety of this women and not to release her into a harmful situation. As the EAI team was discussing Molly’s case, one of the ED Residents made a few telephone calls. Molly’s PCP reported that during her last visit about 2 weeks ago, Mollie was alert and able to respond to questions appropriately. He confirmed that Mollie’s daughter and son in law have experienced psychiatric problems, adding that the son in law has expressed anger regarding Mollie’s living arrangements. The home health care agency was contacted. The RN and aide both report they have never met the son in law and have had very limited contact with Mollie’s daughter. George Orwell’s novel, 1984, depicts a dystopian vision of the future, one in which its citizens thoughts and actions are controlled by Big Brother government. This novel relates the ruthless surveillance and lack of privacy of the citizens to government actions today. Totalitarianism, surveillance, and lack of privacy may all be common themes in Orwell’s novel 1984, but are also prevalent in modern day society and government. Many people today have and will continue to dismiss the ideologies mentioned in 1984 as unrealistic predictions which could never occur in the democratic run system they live by today. But, are Orwell’s ideologies completely implausible, or have his predictions already played a hidden role in society? Many citizens today are truly unaware of how much of their private lives are made public. Especially with new technological advances, the modern democratic government can easily track and survey citizens without their knowledge. While the government depicted in 1984 may use gadgets such as telescreens and moderators such as the Thought Police these ideas depicted can be seen today in the ever evolving democratic government known to be the "equivalent" of the people's voice. The internet and all technological advances give us easier communication and increase productivity, however, at what cost? The loss of one's privacy. It is okay only when it is violated for one's own protection. There are different reason, good and bad, for the loss in privacy. In 1984 the characters don't have privacy due to big brother always watching,the NSA does more snooping than securing, social media does more than connect friends, and technological advances make our lives easier.
Confidentiality is defined as the protection of personal information. It means keeping a client’s information between the health care providers and the client. Every single patient has the right to privacy regarding their personal information from being released to anyone outside of their health care providers. Health care providers have a legal and ethical responsibility to protect all information regarding patients by not disclosing their information to anyone without their written consent from the patient.

This selling of information is what the Europeans call data protection. If the data is not kept private, things such as credit card numbers could be stolen over the phone.

Keeping your privacy is getting harder and harder to do, but even though the privacy setting can help to an extent, they don’t always work the way they should. Putting information out for the public eye to see can be a risk but could also be used to the Facebook users advantage. With this comes a loss of privacy that the user has to deal with.
