Dr. Seuss once said “Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try.” This perfectly sums up Mel Gibson’s “thinks.” He is an amazing actor, producer, and director of movies. Mel Gibson’s manic depression and alcoholism has affected him professionally and creatively by keeping him from working, causing fans to turn away, and creating family conflict.
Even though Mel Gibson has manic depression, he is still creative. Throughout the early stages of a manic episode, people can be happy, productive, and creative. These people have less need for sleep and do not feel tired. They may feel like making a lot of plans because the world seems full of opportunity. The person may feel high, meet many new friends, spend all of their money, and even feel invincible (Colliingwood).
Manic Depression is also referred to as Bipolar Disorder and Severe Mood Swings. It is the severe alternate from unexplainable depressed feelings, thoughts, and actions to elevated personal feeling of euphoria. This disorder often causes dysfunction with family members, personal relationships, work, and legal system (Mallozzi). This causes sever fluctuation in mood or poles, from depression to mania. Half of all the cases of this disorder start when patients are between the ages of 15 and 25. Manic Depression affects 2.4% of the world (Nordqvist).
There are 2 stages during bipolar disorder, the stage of mania and the stage od depression. Mania is the period of euphoria, restlessness, energy, recklessness, and much talking. At first, Mel wanted to be a chef or journalist in college. Yet, his sister submitted an application for him to the National Institute of Dramatic Art. He decided to audition without any prior acting experience. Mel got accepted to the Institute and enrolled in drama school. He performed his first stage debut here in the production of Romeo and Juliet. After graduation from the National Institute of Dramatic Art, he joined the Southern Australian Theatre Company where he performed in title roles in classic productions (Mel Gibson).
He graduated from the “White Station High School”, where he was the senior class president. Following the graduation he enrolled the Harvard University, however he dropped out of studies after taking only one semester. He returned home and started taking acting classes at the Memphis State University, until one day he was spotted by a film producer and got an invitation to audition for a role. Needless is to say that he got that part, and soon moved to Los Angeles in order to further his career.

Bipolar Disorder (Formerly known as Manic Depression) is a mental illness linked to alterations in moods such as mood swings, mania, and depression. There is more than one type, Bipolar I and Bipolar II, and the subcategories are divided by the severity of the symptoms seen, such as cyclothymic disorder, seasonal mood changes, rapid cycling disorder and psychosis. Age of onset usually occurs between 15-30 years old with an average onset of 25 years old but it can affect all ages. (Harvard Medical School; Massachusetts General Hospital , 2013) Bipolar disorder affects more than two million people in the United States every year. (Gardner, 2011)
A person suffering from bipolar disorder alternates from manic states to those of depression. These emotional states can alternate cyclically or one mood may dominate over the other. It is also possible for the two to be mixed or combined with each other.
Bipolar disorder is the condition in which one’s mood switches from periods of extreme highs known as manias to periods of extreme lows known as depression. The name bipolar comes from the root words bi (meaning two) and polar (meaning opposite) (Peacock, 2000). Though often bipolar disorder is developed in a person’s late teens to early adulthood; bipolar disorder’s early symptoms can sometimes be found in young children or may develop later on in life (National Institutes of, 2008). Bipolar disorder has been found to affect both men and women equally. Currently the exact cause of bipolar disorder is not yet known, however it has been found to occur most often in the relatives of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder (National Center for, 2010).
Spike Lee is a filmmaker who has generated numerous controversial films that unapologetically bring delicate social issuest o the media forefront. He honestly portrays life's societal obstacles. He challenges the public to cogitate on the world's glitches and disunion. Spike Lee created a name for himself with films such as Do the Right Thing (1989) and Malcolm X (1992), and with documentaries such as 4 Little Girls (1997) and When the Levees Broke (2006). Lee’s goal was to portray African Americans in a more accurate light. Even today Lee still produces films that directly address modern society's most significant historical movements and episodes. His productions analyze themes of race and discrimination. His work can be analyzed in academic studies such as Philosophy, African Studies, and literary concepts. I am interested in Spike Lee because his craft and career choice is somewhat similar to my future career endeavors. He not only exalted his skills to produce films but he broke barriers of stereotypical Hollywood movies. His works address issues in society such as political, racial, and environmental influences on African American culture. Given that society has evolved into a technology dependent culture; using this talent to visibly shed light to these concerns is an ability I hope to obtain one day.

Psychologically, mania is described as a mood disorder characterized by euphoric states ,extreme physical activity ,excessive talkativeness, distractedness, and sometimes grandiosity. During manic periods a person becomes "high" extremely active , excessively talkative, and easily distracted. During these periods the affected person's self esteem is also often greatly inflated. These people often become aggressive and hostile to others as their self confidence becomes more and more inflated and exaggerated. In extreme cases (like Hamlet's) the manic person may become consistently wild or violent until he or she reaches the point of exhaustion. Manic depressives often function on little or no sleep during their episodes.

The link between creativity and mental illnesses is a topic that has been debated for centuries. The great philosophers Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle all discussed the connection as well. Even in today’s society, there is an ever-present stereotype that creative individuals (i.e. poets, writers, artists, designers, etc.) suffer from bouts of depression, mania, or mental illnesses. It is an age-old question: does depression/mania effect creativity? There is a lot of evidence that both supports and denies the truth behind this question. Some researchers believe the link between depression and creativity is strictly genetic while others believe there is none at all. The argument for this discussion will mostly support the argument that creativity is absolutely a result, cause, and remedy of mania. The manic-depressive illnesses discussed in this debate will mostly include bipolar disorder, mania, and depression. However, there are a lot of factors that play a role in this debate. To discuss, we must first define creativity, the creative process, manic-depressive illnesses, and rumination.
