MAHABHARATA
INTRODUCTION:
Mahabharata is one of the two major epics of India.It was written by Vyasa.This epic portrays the real meaning of life .It also includes lessons of life from Bhagvad Gita. The epic is about the bloodshed and war between the Kaurvas (sons of Dhritrashtra) and the Pandavas(Sons of Pandu).
Shantanu (king of Hastinapur) was married to Ganga.They gave birth to Devavrat (also known as Bheesma . He promised his father that he will not fight for the throne and his step brothers will become the king.Shantanu also married Satyavati and gave birth to two sons(Chitrangada and Vichitravirya).Chitrangada died before marriage and Vichitravirya married Ambika and Ambalika. Ambika gave birth to Dhritrashtra who was blind and Ambalika gave birth to Pandu who was a weakling.Dhritrashtra got married to Gandhari who gave birth to hundred sons and one daughter .
Pandu got married to Kunti and Madri .He had five sons including Yudhishtra ,Bheem ,Arjun, Nakul and Sahdev. After the death of Pandu due to some curse ,Madri commited suicide(sati) and Kunti came back to Hatinapur with her five sons. Pandavas got married to Draupadi(daughter of Drupad) .The kingdom of hastinapur was devided into two parts in order to prevent any war between Kaurvas and Pandavas.Khandavprastha was the part which was given to Pandavas where lived a snake called Takshak(enemy of humankind) and had support of Lord Indra. Yudhistir was a great strategist. On the day of the war, he went to the enemy side to seek blessings from elders. In reality he made a covert deal with them, where all of them agreed to help him and unfolded the secrets of defeating them .Bheesma told Yudhishtir how to stop him. He is also know as Dharamraj . His calmness made him a good leader but on the otherside these trait made him lose his Kingdom.
VIDUR:
Vidur was the half-brother to the kings Dhritarashtra and Pandu of Hastinapura , born the son of the sage Vyasaand Parishrami, the maid to the queens Ambika and Ambalika . He was an incarnation of the god of death and Yama Dharma Raja, who had been cursed by the sage Mandavya for punishing the latter more harshly than his transgression warranted..
He was the Mahamantri and chief advisor of Hastinapur.
Hatshepsut was born to Ahmose and Tuthmosis I, who was pharaoh at the time. Tuthmosis I and Ahmose also gave birth to two sons, both of whom died, leaving Hatshepsut as the only heir to the throne. It is unknown whether her parents raised her to become the pharaoh or not, but she grew up and married her half-brother, Tuthmosis II. Marrying within your family was a regular practice in royal families because it kept blood lines intact. Tuthmosis II and Hatshepsut had a daughter together named Neferure. Hatshepsut’s father died when she was very young, probably around 15 years old. Tuthmosis II took over, but only ruled for about three or four years, when he died from what is believed to be a skin disease. After his death, Tuthmosis the III, Hatshepsut’s stepson, was still too young to rule, which led to her ruling as Queen’s Regent. On the other hand, Arjuna is the main character of “The Bhagavad-Gita”, the 63rd minor book of the Mahabharata. The story follows Ajuana’s spiritual tutoring from his good friend Lord Krsha, whom is god in the form of a human. Ajuana displays a few characteristics of an epic hero, and The Bhagavad-Gita does show a trait or two of an epic poem. However, there is more evidence working contradicting it “The Bhagavad-Gita” not being an epic poem and Ajuana being an epic hero. The Bhagavad does not have an epic hero, nor does it take place in a series of different settings, albeit it did have a have one God within the story. Ajuana is not from noble birth, he does not battle any superhuman foes, nor does he embark on an epic journey.
The Epic of Gilgamesh has many similarities to The Legend of King Arthur. Although Gilgamesh and King Arthur have comparison they also have differences. The main difference is that one is an Epic and the other is a Legend. To compare and contrast The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Legend of King Arthor, one must first know what the words, "Epic" and "Legend" mean. Primarily, "epic" is a long narrative poem about the deeds of a semi-god, also known as a superhuman hero who's actions are depended on as the fate of a nation, tribe or a human race. This usually consists of an adventure filled plot and is concerned with timeless human problems such as honour, jealousy, war and hatred. These contain gods and goddesses and the setting is fixed in a far distant place at a time long past. Epics are based on legends and myths.
King tut was eight or nine when he took over as king. When he took the crown he was married to his queen. In Egypt it was normal for kings to marry their sister or half sister. With King Tut he married his half sister. It is believed that when King Tut was crowned king he was heavily influenced by his great uncle Ay. When a new king comes in to rule they have to go through coronation, meaning to be presented with multiple crowns. The most important ones were red, white, double crown, blue crown and the nemes headdress. The king had to visors, the highest officials in the government, who were in charge of the upper and lower parts of Egypt. (Hawass 29-56)
Little is known about the origins of Nefertiti but it seems unlikely that she was of royal blood. We know of no one claiming to be related to Nefertiti. Her father was possibly a high official of Amenhotep III and Akhenaten called Ay, who went on to become Pharaoh after Tutankhamun. "Nefertiti may have been a foreigner who, quite literally, arrived at the Egyptian court in order to marry the king"(Tyldesley 1999). There is no firm date for the royal marriage; although monumental evidence suggests that it occurred either just before or shortly after Amenhotep's accession to the throne. Akhenaten and Nefertiti had six daughters, the elder three being born at Thebesm and the younger three at Amarna: Meritaten (Beloved of the Aten'), Meketaten (Protected by the Aten'), Ankhesepaaten (Living through the Aten'), Neferneferuaten (Exquisite Beauty of The Sun Disc'), Neferneferure (Exquisite Beauty of Re'), and Setepenre (Chosen of Re') (Tyldesley 1999). It is possible that she also had sons, although no record has been found of this. It was a practice in Egyptian art not to portray the male heirs as children. Possibly, she may have been the mother of Tutankhamun, the boy pharaoh who succeeded to the throne at the age of eleven and died nine years later (Sporre 2000).
Asoka was one of the greatest rulers of ancient India. He was the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya of Magadha who established the first Indian empire. Chandragupta reigned for twenty-four years before relinquishing his throne in favor of his son, Bundusara (Asoka’s father), who left no noticeable mark upon the empire. Asoka was born in 304 B.C. and was known in his youth as Canda Asoka (the fierce Asoka) because of his aggressive nature.
Revolutionary is defined as “something markedly changed or introducing radical change” ("Related Queries." Revolutionary). Some events that had a radical change was the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution in Europe. These events began when there was a split between the Parliament and King Charles I. Both sides had many arguments, and were not willing to back down over the principles that they had about the manner of the government, and how all those problems could be solved. The country then split into two sides, one was people who supported the Parliament, and then theres people who supported the Royalists, and both sides had fought many wars over the situation. This battle ended by the execution of King Charles I. The English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution were truly revolutionary events and these events had many dramatic changes that occurred and changed their society. These dramatic changes changed Europe in it’s social and political ways that the Europeans gained rights and both events had an effect to their economic ways as well.
John Beckett mentions that the Glorious Revolution has been considered a historical event related to the political issues. The main target of this historical event was to create a commercial freedom in Europe. After this revolution was done, trade relations in Europe went up, and the Bill of Rights was also created in 1689. Today, the Bill of Rights is shown and known that it was the first building stone for the British constitution because it limited the monarchic power. During the eighteenth century, the period of the Age of Enlightenment is considered between 1713 and 1789 because Anthony Pagden states that Europe was like a republic of states, and it was like a union acting together and talking with one voice. At first, Gilgamesh is a controlling and arrogant king, who thinks only of himself. He constantly works the men, building enormous walls surrounding the entire kingdom and countless temples. He “leaves no virgin to her lover” (62) no matter who she was, young or old. Additionally, he takes away the children so that “no son is left with his father” (62). Gilgamesh treats his people with such disrespect that they begin to complain about him to the gods. When Anu, the god of firmament, hears the people’s lamentations he goes to Aruru, the goddess of creation saying, “You made him, O Aruru, now create his equal” (62). The people and the gods felt that if Gilgamesh had someone equal to him in strength and power that they would compete together leaving the city of Uruk in peace. Therefore, in reply to the grievances of the gods and people Enkidu is sent down to earth.
The theory is that when people’s egos are in the way, it causes them to make mistakes and their mistakes make a person realize that their ego affects them, in The Odyssey, by Homer, this dilemma is present for Odysseus. In the beginning of The Odyssey, Odysseus has a huge ego problem. Odysseus was once a generous and successful man, his success and acts of generosity cause his ego to get in the way, and he makes mistakes as a consequence, his ego gets in the way and has failures. When Odysseus realizes his failures, he turns back to his self again. Although, Odysseus was a kind and successful man, his success lead to ego problems which lead to failure and his failures transforms him to the successful Odysseus again.
Genghis Khan, the Mongol ruler who united the many clans of Mongolia and created the biggest land empire the world has ever seen was a vicious conqueror who fought his way to the top. The Mongolian and Chinese people see him as an inspirational hero who led his people to greatness, while other nations that his rule came in contact with see him as a savage who murdered many and killed relentlessly. Whether you see him in a positive light or a negative one, in order to really understand Genghis Khan you must first know his story and where he came from.
Yudhisthira’s journey to heaven was a trying one. He lost his brothers and his wife during it, yet a random dog followed him the entire way.
