The solution to the current problem of Canadians relying on the minimum wage as their living wage seems simple. Create a law that makes it mandatory for employers and companies to pay their workers a living wage. But at the moment, it doesn’t seem like the government is really doing much to try and help those who are relying on a minimum wage to be their living wage. But there are ways that companies and employers in Canada can help improve this problem and help more Canadians live a healthy and financially stable life.
One solution is for companies to become a living wage employer. According to Living Wage Canada, between Alberta, British Colombia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and the North-West Territories, there are 267 companies and employers paying their workers a living wage, Ontario having the most at 136. Living Wage Canada gives employers all the information they need to become a living wage employer themselves. Companies do this through what Living Wage Canada calls, the Living Wage Employer Certification Process. Communities can do this by first calculating what the living wage for their community would be. Find and factor in their community landmarks such as universities and local businesses. Once this is done the community will have to decide if their community is ready to implement the calculated living wage. If the community decides they are ready for a living wage they will then need to create and launch a campaign and find some living wage employers. Once this is all done the community will need to re-calculate the living wage on a yearly basis to keep it up to date with the needs of workers and businesses in the
