Marijuana is becoming more and more prominent in today’s society, it has become something that is almost readily available whenever one wants it. This issue has become a critical situation because it has divided many people, some believe that the legalization would be good for the economy and society. Others fear that with the legalization for recreational use will destroy our youth and will cause financial problems in the future. The legalization of marijuana would have overall positive effects on society and the economy. Funding for the “War on Drugs” would be drastically lessened allowing officials to focus on the illegal trafficking of drugs in and out of the United States as opposed to spending massive amounts of tax dollars on preventing the public from obtaining and using marijuana. The general public could openly consume cannabis, which is extremely less dangerous and unhealthy than the consumption of alcohol, and tobacco products, which may even prevent damages and addictions to these more harmful substances. The national debt could be eliminated with very rapid succession through the taxation of cannabis. Colorado and Washington have already legalized marijuana for recreational purpose and both states have made an overwhelmingly large sum of money in tax dollars as opposed to having to raise taxes in other areas to ensure public funding meets the needs of the community.

...President Obama isn’t quite sure whether or not he feels this is something worth pursuing. However he knows that is will benefit us and if we are benefited then perhaps the drug violence will be somewhat diminished. Of course there will be a few restrictions on how much can be grown and when it can be sold but if we were to make this something that was easily obtainable then the government could relax and not have to worry about something as simple as marijuana. Initiative 502 (legalization of medical marijuana) is currently under discussion by the Liquor Control Board. If government passes this law people will be able to buy medical marijuana without having to make bogus claims about some illness that most of them do not even have. Overall I believe that this article relates to my topic because it discusses why the legalization will help our society and economy.
