First it was The Godfather and The Sopranos, and then it was Jersey Shore followed by Jersey Licious and Mob wives. The media is an extremely powerful factor which influences most of our beliefs norms and even representations of certain ethnic groups. Every time one opens there television to watch something, they are getting a dose of misrepresentation of a certain belief, person etc… Italian stereotypes are some of the most common stereotypes in the media and they are worst now more than ever before. Even though Italians are not being represented in TV shows and movies the way they previously were in the 1900’s, they are still being stereotyped in contemporary television programs and movies. To better understand what the media depicts Italians They are no longer the old Italian women who cook and take care of their husbands. Francesco from the IAOVC community explains in his article Discrimination Against Italian Americans Persist, that they are now portrayed as much younger women and are shown to be ‘bimbos’.( Francesco in Associations, Italy (link below)). A bimbo is basically a woman who has very attractive looks but no brains. In almost all reality shows where Italian women are in them, the women all dress provocatively with low cut shirts and tight short skirts with flashy colors and very big attitudes. (Taken in context from Finlo Rohrer bbcnews)When you turn the TV on to watch a reality show, it will be very easy to spot the Italian woman because they are almost always the loud ones fighting with each other over the most unnecessary things with long claw like nails and skin tight dresses. As well, they only care about appearances and they always cause chaos. A popular reality show is the show JerseyLicious where stylists from New Jersey are depicted as having big hair and big drama. All of the women on this show are over dramatic and all seem to have overly done tans, short tight flashy clothes and very loud
