In our world today every country has their own set of avowed and ascribed identities for it's population. An avowed identity is one a person gives to themselves, a woman might say she’s a sister or a wife. The opposite of that is an ascribed identity, or how society sees someone. For example, a rich person could be perceived as a snob. To ascribe someone with an identity is to judge them based on societal norms. The entertainment industry in America is no different then it's parent culture. Both men and women in this industry have identities placed on them, and they change based on their career. Gender roles are based on the norms and standards in different societies (Flores 2012). Each societies has their own set of social norms, and the identities that fit those norms. In the United States masculine roles are associated with strength, dominance, and aggression. Women in the US are expected to be more passive, nurturing and subordinate (Flores 2012). Gender roles not only assign traits to men and women they affect the way men and women are supposed to think and act. Women are held to a different set of rules than men are. For a woman to show anger in public is highly stigmatized, and looked down upon. When a man does it it's considered normal. When women are in the media they are given a different set of gender norms. Which is ironic sense we are talking about the fashion and clothing. Even though women are in charge in this form of entertainment they're are still negative ascribed identities coming from this. Women are supposed to be flawless and use the sex sales method. In the industry men are actually ascribed in the same fashion. The roles of masculine and femininity are clearly laid out in this industry. Even though that is the cause the lines are starting to be crossed women are wanting to wear more masculine clothes. By that I mean that skirts are being traded for trouser (Nairisha Batada 2013). Batada also states that this movement is called unconditionally beauty and is blurring that strict ascriptions of both male and female models (Batada 2013).
