Deviance and delinquency may be attributed to the community’s structure and social organization. In this paper the possible theories of deviance and social control that may explain why the young man went into crime will be analyzed.
Functionalist perspective - Strain Theory
From a functionalist perspective, the strain theory explains that individuals react and commit a crime due to certain strains that are put on them by their lifestyle and the society. Deviance can be accelerated by labelling. Labelling makes the deviant acquire a master position, such as a young thief, murderer, and this status shapes and rules how others view the individual. The young man could have become stigmatized due such labelling. Eventually, the young man may have resulted in a self-fulfilling prophecy and actions leading to deviance and criminal activities.
