Conformity; to comply with the rules, standards or laws. Ray Bradbury uses conformity in Fahrenheit 451, Roald Dahl uses it in “Lamb to the Slaughter” as well. In Stephen Vincent Benet “By the Waters of Babylon” they use conformity, and in “Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin. The similarities of theme in Fahrenheit 451 and “Lamb to the Slaughter” are noticeable and deserve complete study. Most obvious comparisons are Mildred and Mary, having to face choices about conforming, Montag and John are both non conformers, Captain Beatty and Captain John Barton are both conformers. Montag is a non conformer in the book Fahrenheit 451. It’s shown when it says “Then he reached up and pulled back the grille of the air conditioning system and reached far back inside to the right and moved still another sliding sheet of metal and took out a book” (65). Montag is a fireman, instead of putting out fires they are starting books on fire, Montag starts taking books from houses they were burning and hides them in his ceiling. He is breaking the rules of his society by having books. In Tom Godwin's “By the Waters of Babylon” John is a non conformer that wants to know the truth. It’s shown in this statement “The north and the west and the south are good hunting ground, but it is forbidden to go east. It is forbidden to go to any of the dead places” (175). John's society is a group of survivors that has been living in fear, after a nuclear war. John goes to the forbidden city which is against the rules of his society. Because Montag and John are both non conformers it reveals this obvious similarity. In Captain Beatty and Captain John Barton are both conformers to their society’s rules. In Fahrenheit 451 Captain Beatty is a conformer and enforces the rules of his society. He enforces these rules
