Cell phones have become a modern day necessity. There are over 266 million cell phone subscribers in America, and many Americans use their cell phones as their primary source of communication (Emerging markets fuel cell phone growth). Cell phones which once where a luxury item are now considered an everyday requirement. When walking down the street everyone from the young to the elderly seems to be talking or texting on their cellular devices. How are cell phones affecting the generation of the future? Cell phones are also commonly being used to fill in free time. Many Americans around 41 percent use time while waiting in line or traveling to use their cell phones to pass time (Pew Internet Project Data Memo). With cell phone usage in public areas being so common many Americans (82%) report being irritated by loud cell phone users (Pew Internet Project Data Memo). 8 percent of Americans admit to drawing attention to themselves and receiving mean stares while on their cell phones in public. Why are so many people on their phones, and why does it seem they are always on their phones? 52 percent of cell phone owners and 81 percent of cell phone users who do not have land lines always have their phone on them and turned on. When asked 50 percent of landline users said that they would consider switching to only having a cell phone, while the other 50 percent said they would keep their landline. With contact with people anytime and anywhere it makes this mobile world that much easier to communicate with anyone on the go.
