America is not the illustrated land of opportunity to all. The statement provided that, a land giving opportunity to all is judgmental for many concerning reasons. For one, America is known as a country where people of various races are informed of great dreams that seem reachable, but the chances of an immigrant moving to America and starting a new life are slim. Throughout American history, the opportunity to create something has always been difficult and will sincerely remain that way no matter the sacrifices a person must give up on in their life. The idea that is being presented is that discrimination is taking a role in analyzing a person’s work ethic and educational background. This unfair descriptive process was and still is causing issues with native employment. In essence to the downgrading employment records, Writer Peralta took note of E.P.I. Author Austin and his statement which says, “ their odds of being employed are 31 percent lower than those of whites”. Consequently, the recordings of Native Americans losing employment ratios is due to educational opportunities that are unreachable for a majority of the people leading into opportunities being destroyed. This chapter focuses on the experiences that are expressed through these story lines such as “I did not get a (job or promotion) because of a black man.” The way dominant group shares their racial stories can be broken down into two categories ' story line and testimonies. Whites would freely express themselves providing, with evidence to reinforce their point of view. When they 're asked about subjects such as affirmative action or reparations, the respondents’ would usually insert these lines “the past is the past" or “I did not own slave,” to solidify their opposing view on the topic. However, the story line “I did not get a Job or promotion because of a black man,” is a problematic statement due to the many accounts of race discrimination in hiring, which directly affects subordinate groups when applying for jobs.
In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck shows American dream as an unreachable goal for the characters. Of Mice and Men is a novel based on two childhood friends, Lennie and George, who travel together in search of work. Lennie, the gentle giant, has a mental disability and an obsession of petting soft objects. One day, while stroking a girl’s hair, Lennie accidently kills her. And eventually by the end of the novel, George is forced to shoot Lennie. The American Dream, as defined by Dictionary.com is, "the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available for every American." Unlike any other literary period, the Contemporary Period has taken the American Dream and contorted it into something completely obscene compared to its original form. The Contemporary Period began in 1939 and is still evolving in today's society. The American Dream was previously a goal that every American could achieve with hard work, but during the Contemporary Period the American Dream seems to be impossible to achieve. The dramatic shift of technology during the American Contemporary Period transformed the American Dream by giving it a more egocentric connotation along with affecting the daily lives of citizens, therefore establishing the aspiration for self-achievement, which can be revealed through the literature of this time.

A person can not pick up a history book and read through the pages with out finding something on how a particular athlete or group of athletes were persecuted because of their race. For centuries the belief that America is the land of opportunity has been spread through society by rich, white men. The vast majority of the population has been silenced through oppression. The history of America is stained with blood, and success is measured in body count. For some in society America might be considered the land of opportunity, but for them to succeed they must climb onto the backs of others. The oppression that exists in society from the 1500’s onward till today represents the blatant fallacies that exist in the statement “America is the land of opportunity.” Starting with the mistreatment of the Native Americans and then continuing onto the oppression and general practice of slavery, white men have been forcing themselves ahead of everyone else through immoral and selfish practices. In a way, yes; America is the land of opportunities, rich, white men can accomplish whatever they set their minds to with the help of those below them. The reality for the vast majority of americans is a world of oppression and suffering with no hope of success, so for that reason America as a whole is not the land of opportunity.
