Since the beginning of our nation, literature has attempted to define “American Dream.” For the Puritans, living the American dream meant building God’s kingdom in this world and practicing their faith without persecution, whereas other settlers sought adventure and financial success. But within the last one hundred years the concept of the American Dream has taken on new meaning as the values and principles of cultures have changed. The modern man has sought security in the unachievable goal. Throughout the twentieth century literary periods, authors have unearthed the corrupt nature of an evolving American Dream, which has led to loss the moral values and fulfilment in the present reality. The concept of the American dream is so rooted in our culture that the Framers of the Declaration of Independence even included in the document that it was a self-evident truth: “All men are created equal” and are “endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights,” which include “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (US 1776) While the authors were certainly hopeful in including the phrase in the Declaration, they neglected to define the pursuit of happiness. Instead, when looking deeper into the meaning the phrase the “pursuit of happiness,” it seems the Framers were suggesting that happiness can’t even be achieved, but rather it is a goal, seldom attained. Yet, some seem to have attained happiness through the American dream. In Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography, Franklin embodies what many suggest as the portrait of the American dream (Packer-Kinlaw 5). He believed, that in order to achieve financial success and an esteemed place in society one must pursue the virtues of morality, industry, and frugality. In the postmodern American Dream, consumerism serves as “white noise” to forget our death. The twentieth century has American dream has dramatically morphed from the pursuit of happiness the Framers of the Declaration of Independence intended. Ben Franklin sought happiness in the virtues morality, industry, and frugality, but others for others it was the pursuit of capitalism, climbing the social ladder, or filling your life with possessions. The complexity of the American Dream is that it has mean something different for each culture. Literature has been the vehicle for capturing the appraised dream for those in search of its security. The notion that there is opportunity for life to be richer and fuller for everyone has been replaced by the bitter reality of the American Dream, it is only a fantasy.
