The economy is faced with challenges for the youth and the elderly in order to become employed in various jobs. “Ageism is defined as stereotypes, prejudice, or discrimination against (but also in favour of) people because of their chronological age” (Ayalon &Tesch- Romer, 2017). Ageism affects a person behavioral, emotional and cognitive thinking skills. It is a form of prejudice that discriminates against people due to their age.
It is argued that this has affected our youth as of today. Certain jobs such as cashiers, sale associates, fast food or part-time jobs used to be considered youth jobs but with the economy like the way it is, many older people are fulfilling these positions now. With the high cost of living and financial cost, the older generations are having to work now more than they used to.
The young ages think they can get jobs due to being young, educated more, work at a steady pace and in better health. The youth would say that a barrier would be the older workers are standing in the way of their success due to they had their chance in the past and now it is there time to work. Some of the younger people believe that this leaves little to no room for them in the job field.
The older people think they are unable to secure the jobs they seek due to they are aged.

Stereotypes affect the day to day living of the elderly, whether it is through job attainment and sustainability, access and use of healthcare, and overall personal autonomy. Due to the current aging population the government of Canada has eliminated the mandatory retirement age and is looking to raise the retirement age (Minichiello, Browne, & Kendig, 2000), from 65 to at least 70, to ensure financial stability for all in the long term (Novac et al., 2014). There are profound effects of ageism that can be harmful to a patient’s overall health. Ageism can cause physicians to consistently treat older patients unequally compared to younger adults. Unequal treatment can be divided into the under-treatment of symptoms and the over-treatment of symptoms. The imbalance in how a physician would treat a geriatric patient is ageist because the older adult is not getting fair treatment in every case. Under-treatment and over-treatment are different; however, they are both equally as harmful to a patients health.

In year 1967, the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act ADEA was passed to prohibit discrimination against workers over age 40 and older. Another law in the year 1964, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, or national origin. However there are still age discrimination and it seems to be more especially for older women more than older men.
