The economy is faced with challenges for the youth and the elderly in order to become employed in various jobs. “Ageism is defined as stereotypes, prejudice, or discrimination against (but also in favour of) people because of their chronological age” (Ayalon &Tesch- Romer, 2017). Ageism affects a person behavioral, emotional and cognitive thinking skills. It is a form of prejudice that discriminates against people due to their age.
It is argued that this has affected our youth as of today. Certain jobs such as cashiers, sale associates, fast food or part-time jobs used to be considered youth jobs but with the economy like the way it is, many older people are fulfilling these positions now. With the high cost of living and financial cost, the older generations are having to work now more than they used to.
The young ages think they can get jobs due to being young, educated more, work at a steady pace and in better health. The youth would say that a barrier would be the older workers are standing in the way of their success due to they had their chance in the past and now it is there time to work. Some of the younger people believe that this leaves little to no room for them in the job field.

It reaches out to communities that discrimination on the basis of age was not only unacceptable but unlawful. “Congress passed the ADEA in 1967, three years after passing Title VII, the federal law prohibiting discrimination against employees on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion” (Pitsch, 2017).
