These days, movie ideas come almost exclusively from books or other types of media. Artists always want to get that connection to their audiences, often by evoking emotion. The film Romeo+Juliet by Baz Luhrmann and play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare are no exception. The film Romeo+Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann connects better with readers than Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare through its allusions to well known symbols, use of facial expressions, and the relatable topics that all audiences can connect to. The allusions to well known symbols and objects used by Baz Luhrmann in the movie allows audiences to connect with the film in a way that the play cannot achieve. For instance, in the prologue, instead of being read by an actor onstage, that part if the play is read in a newscast. This is a great conversion of old times to current because nowadays everybody watches the news and gets information from it. So it gives the reader a sense that they are getting information that is necessary, which it is. In the play, at line 3.1.78, Mercutio alludes to The Prince of Cats. He says “Good King of Cats, nothing but one of your nine lives that I mean to make bold…”. Not many readers would get that allusion, because many young people don't even know what The Prince of Cats is.
