The journey of an outcast, where people that are not the norm, people that are separated, and people also that stands out in regular life, shouldn’t be treated differently, even though they may seem out of the norm. The majority of people don’t understand why these outsiders do this. In the novel, The Chrysalids by John Wyndham and the film The Fifth Element directed by Luc Besson, are both outstanding examples of the three main arguments of the archetypal outcast. First, all outcasts have a different way of thinking, acting, and becoming stronger as they meet new challenges and people. Second, these types of people show a new way of thinking; people that are outcasts have a strong mentality and also stand out amongst most ordinary people. Third, outsiders have an advantage by being brave and confronting danger. However, sometimes these outcasts have secrets that they cannot tell anybody or show, leading to how they represent an outsider and push away from sociality. Being an outcast is a key ingredient to become a stronger person, and impact new people who they meet by showing them a different way of thinking.
An outsider’s traits definitely show in both the novel - The Chrysalids and the film, - The Fifth element, The Characters Korben and David both share the same outcast traits. David’s rebellious action to his family and community is an example of how David is an outcast in the story, “With everyone busy, I was able to get away early from the community, me and Sophie adventured with caution.” (Wyndham 42). Though being an outcast in life can have its ups and downs, being an outcast is an important trait in life, and knowing someone with the same type of traits is equally important too. Outcasts impact new people and show them a new way of thinking and ideas. Even though outcasts are different, does not mean they should be rejected by human civilization. In addition, the reason why people that are outcasts will always have a stronger mentality is because of how they react better to situations than regular people. Not all outsiders are quiet, and once they open up, there is a whole collection of different ideas and thinking. Just because they are different than regular people, does not mean that they should be treated differently.
The Outsider characters Edward and Raphael from the movie ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and the novel ‘Trash’ change their bland and featureless environments by providing creativity and ambition to the locals. Edward is an Outsider by his appearance while Raphael is an Outsider by poverty. Their communities express kindness to them both. An outcast is a person who has been rejected by society or a social group, an outsider. Many times outcasts are rejected, isolated, and judged. However, what gives us that right to isolated, reject, and judge other people? When in fact you may not even know the person whom you are showing this impoliteness to. Djuna Barnes was an outcast. She has been rejected, isolated judged yet, she figuratively took the word outcast and made it her own. She speaks for those who can’t speak for themselves.

David teachers her more about her deviation and helps her send thought-shapes. After Petra's pony was killed, David explains, “I did my best to explain to her, but even at her present age of almost eight the necessity of putting it into words that were simple enough presented a difficulty”(112). This shows David is trying to teach Petra about telepathy and proves his responsibility.
In the stories “To Set Our House in Order” and “The Lamp at Noon” the authors are both able to effectively communicate that alienation is self-inflicted, while using multiple different techniques. As a result it becomes apparent that each author can take a similar approach to the alienation of a character in the story yet develop the theme in a unique way.
Society often pressures individuals within it to conform to different ideals and norms. This stems from the fact that individuals in a society are expected to act in a certain way. If a person or group of people do not satisfy society’s expectations, they are looked down upon by others. This can lead to individuals isolating themselves from others, or being isolated from others, because they are considered as outcasts. The emotional turmoil that can result from this, as well as the internal conflict of whether or not to conform, can transform an individual into a completely different person. This transformation can either be beneficial or harmful to the individual as well as those around them. The individual can become an improved version of himself or herself but conversely, they can become violent, rebellious and destructive. The novels Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk and A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess both explore the negative effects experienced by individuals living within the confines of society’s narrow-mindedness. In A Clockwork Orange, protagonist Alex was the leader of a small group of teenage criminals. He did not have a healthy relationship with either one of his parents or with others around him. Instead he spent most of his time alone during the day and at night roamed the streets in search of victims he could mug or rape. In Fight Club the unnamed protagonist was an outcast in his community. He chose to distance and isolate himself from others and as a result had no friends, with the exception of Tyler Durden and Marla Singer. As “The Blue Hotel,” “The Displaced Person,” “Bernice Bobs her Hair,” and In Dubious Battle demonstrate, the outsiders in each story, though instilling an initial fear in the eyes of society, experience a sudden and considerable downfall in the end. Each of these defeats, some more extreme than others, result from a clash of society’s fixed guidelines with an outsider’s challenge of these rules. Whether this rebellion against society constitutes a conscious or unconscious effort, and whether the punishment results in justifiable or unjustifiable consequences, one pattern emerges. The outsider instills fear in the mind of the community, and as a defense mechanism, society takes it upon itself to conquer the stranger, leading to his or her ultimate downfall.

The subject of “Strangers Like Me” is outcasts in society. In the line, “I wanna know about these strangers like me,” the reader sees that the main character in the song feels like an outsider to his surroundings. The reader can compare this with how the monster feels in Frankenstein. The two can relate with the feeling that everything is new to them, and they do not feel like they belong. Phil Collins goes on to request, “Tell me more, please show me.” People who are foreign to a place tend to ask questions until they begin to understand. The main character in the song is begging for information from these strangers, which mirrors how the monster in Frankenstein has a hunger for knowledge from the cottagers.
In ”Revenge of the Geeks” ,an example can be found in this quote:“...Taylor Swift’s classmates left the lunch table as soon as she sat down because they disdained her taste for country music. Last year, the Grammy winner was the nation’s top-selling recording artist.” pg. 201. In other words, Taylor Swift was excluded from her friend group because they didn’t share the same interests. Similarly, in the poem “Sonnet, With Bird” it states “...I traveled to London to promote my first internationally published book. A Native American in England!” pg. 214. This shows that even Native Americans who travel the world can still feel like a foreigner at times. Lastly, from my own personal experience, I have a family member who always was an outcast during their teen years, but then when they matured as an adult they become very successful with their created business and they didn’t rely on being popular to boost their activity. On the other hand, some may think that kids who were outsiders choose to be by their actions and that people can only be an outsider if they want to be. In “Revenge of the Geeks” an 8th grader says “The smart thing repels girls.” pg. 226. He talks about how his intellectual abilities prevent him from attracting girls. As people socialize, they create interactions whose products are influential to act back upon the people to determine or constrain actions. Moreover, social interactions may be likened to a theatre whereby people are the actors as the rest of the people are the audience. These other people actively observe the role-playing and respond by reacting to the performances. However, people’s behaviors tend to change when they are alone as they get rid of the roles they play in front of others.
Society is filled with outcasts. Everywhere one looks, there is someone who is different and has been labeled as an outcast by the others around them. People fear disturbance of their regular lives, so they do their best to keep them free of people who could do just that. An example of this in our society is shown in people of color. Whites label people who do not look the same as them as and treat them as if they are less important as they are. The white people in our society, many times unconsciously, degrade people of color because they fear the intuition that they could cause in their everyday lives.
