Insecurity and a lack of self-confidence of one’s self is a battle that many people struggle with. Almost everyone can relate to that time period in their life when they felt their social life was depleted, and they constantly looked for mirrors to check their appearance. With the amount of online resources and entertainment available, people are almost always on the Internet. The Internet distracts people from their real life conflicts, with information constantly added to it.
There are many youth today that will check there social media accounts before or instead of starting their homework. Also people stuck in a cubicle having to write daily blogs online can gain carpool tunnel from over typing. Being addicted to the internet can harm our health in more ways than one. With using the internet extensively, “these addicts routinely experience apathy, depression, anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, arability, and clouded thinking.” Relating back to Stoll’s claim that the internet is a negative social development, we can see that being addicted to the sociality of the internet use can be detrimental to our lives. The World Wide Web (www) is part of almost everyone’s everyday life. In addition to the uses of computers, we can use our hand held devices to access the internet as well. The ability to have unlimited access to the internet from anywhere at any time has become the cause of a serious addiction that affects about one in every eight Americans; this addiction is referred to as Internet Addiction. Internet addiction is a compulsive behavioral disorder which affects the way a person lives their daily life (Weinstein and Lejoyeux). It causes severe tension on the addict’s family, friends, and work environment.
People with an addiction will need more time online to be happy. When access to the internet is not available people will show signs of anxiety, depression, irritability, trembling hands, and restlessness. There are five types of internet addiction. The first is Net-Gaming. People with this addiction participate in online games, Multi User Dungeon Games (MUDs), will visit virtual casinos, and my become obsessed with e-auctions and online trading and shopping.

As stated in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Internet addiction is caused by excessive computer use and Internet access, leading to irregularity in behaviour (Weinstein and Lejoyeux 277). Examples of websites that users are mostly addicted to include online gaming, chat rooms and social media sites. This topic of interest is important and captivating to most, since the Internet has become an integral part in many people’s daily lives. A survey conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project shows that as of September 2013, 86% of American adults use the Internet, up from 14% in 1995 (“ Pew Internet and American Life Project”).
Rahamathulla argues that this addiction could damage their social skills as well as their ability to form intimate relationships. Rahamathulla says that "The young people who are introverts who are having difficulties establishing a rapport with others are going to go deeper into these kinds of forums to interact with others, that will further shrink their social network." In Rahamathulla’s research he found that while Internet chat rooms are not the ideal form of communication for most of these "addicted" teens, it is better than no interaction at all. The research revealed that these teens are lonely, usually unpopular and that chat rooms contribute to some teenagers fearing one on one situations. Internet chat rooms do not seem like they are targeting this specific demographic, when it is considered that there are chat rooms for basically every interest any human in the world could think of.

The people that fall into this category seem to be the most prone to all mental disorders. Some say that these people feel the need to find an escape from their lack of actual relationships, so they see the Internet as a very attractive escape from this harsh reality, somewhat like the reason an individual would turn to drug addiction. Seeing has how this disorder has arisen relatively recently, it hasn't been studied a great deal. Potera introduces many of these details in her essay. She points out that addiction to the Internet is an ever-growing concern throughout the entire world.
